System Requirements
-------------------
This product requires at least a 486/DX 2/66 MHz PC running
Windows 95, or Windows 98.
This product will NOT run under Windows NT, and is not designed
for Windows NT. A Windows NT version will be released shortly.

* Windows 95 users should have Service Pack #1 installed.

-----------------------------
What IS Winlog For Windows 98
-----------------------------
WinLog is a utility to log when your Windows 95 or Windows 98 PC was booted.
It logs the date and time.
The log is mildly encrypted and CrC checked to determine if it has been tampered with.
Winlog has the ability to secure the Graphical Interface for viewing the log with password protection.
The log may be saved unencrypted in a text file, or may be printed out, or copied to the Windows Clipboard.
Upon registration the GUI interface can be password protected and logs failed attempts at login for your protection.

Why would someone need an application such as this?
Two reasons:
Performance monitoring - Some system service departments like to know how often a PC is used, does the user turn the PC off at night or leave it running?

Security - Like to know if someone got into your PC lately? This application excels in this type of security. Under Windows NT you generally have this built in through the event viewer, which will always show some sort of message or another indicating a bootup has occured.

What's New With WinLog
--------------------------
A What's New section has been added to online help. To review
WinLog For Windows '98's new features and functions go to the
following URL
http://www.tngbbs.com/ccs/winlog/whatsnew.htm

WinLog For Windows 98 is built with a new compiler that allows standalone EXE's without the large DLL's required with Visual Basic, the previous compiler used. This version was created from scratch and is a major overhaul for Winlog For Windows 98.
WinLog does require the Checkreg.dll however, omission of this will cause the program to not run.
The splash screen may be disabled in the unregistered version upon system startup, to hide the product in action, but the splash screen cannot be disabled upon starting the user interface to view the log until the application has been registered.
The status bar may be disabled and removed from the application with the registered version.

New security options will prevent changing of the password from the registry as it is stored elsewhere, all failed login attempts are recorded and an option has been added to view this log in Winlog For Windows 98 (Registered version). The password is also encrypted in a file, which will be removed during uninstall.

Basically this is a new product, vastly different from the old product and very little code was ported from the old product to the new product.
This product is also vastly superior to the old Visual Basic application in speed and memory performance.

If a password is forgotten or lost, the product can NOT be uninstalled, only deleted. A new installation will not correct this issue. You will need to contact Computer Creations Software to learn how to get around this. This is for the user/admin protection to prevent any person from violating the security of this application.

-----
Setup
-----
Copy all files from the original archive into a directory of your choice and run Winlog.exe.
Setup is automatic and an uninstaller is included, although it may not always remove the files it will remove all registry entries.
On the initial run of Winlog For Windows '98 it will prompt you for specific options
and self install.

NOTES:
It is recommended that you do not install this product to the root of any drive.

-------------
Network Setup
-------------
WinLog For Windows '98 supports shared installation to a network.
If all files are copied to a network drive, please run WinLog For Windows 98 from that network drive for the installation. You must map a drive to that network resource.
If this mapped drive changes in the future, Winlog For Windows 98 will not run correctly.

NOTES:

---------------------------------------------
Component Overinstall and Component Uninstall
---------------------------------------------
It is important that you uninstall any previous version of Winlog For Windows 98 as the architecture of the product has changed from a Visual Basic platform to a standalone platform (Except one DLL).
While most registry changes are exact, results are unpredictable.

-----------------------------
WinLog For Windows 98 Options
-----------------------------
The Following options are available with the unregistered version:
Disabling the splash screen on system startup
Print log file
Save log file as text
Copy Log to clipboard
Disable logging - Especially useful if you are on vacation, the 45 day evaluation period is only in effect when Winlog is started.
Disable prompting to clear the log.

Additional options for registered versions:

Disable splash screen at application startup.
Password protect the GUI interface.
No application termination after 45 days.

------------------
Uninstall
------------------
This product has an uninstall program with it, named wUnwise.exe which will uninstall all registry entries and most files, it may not delete all files so please remove the remaining files manually.
I am currently working on a setup program with InstallShield (TM) and will release it shortly to replace this version.
