CREDITS

DOSPPPD was developed by Antonio Lopez Molero

SETUP was compiled using Borland C/C++ compiler as a large memory model.

The Text Windowing system is C/Windows by Mix Software.

The Serial Communications Libraries are from Marshall Soft Computing.

OVERVIEW

This SETUP is actually two programs: SETUP.EXE and PPPTERM.EXE.

Why do we need them? Well, for Internet users in general, and specially those
trying to access it from DOS, the hardest part has always been the part that
involves setting up the packet driver and getting a successful login to your
Internet Service Provider (ISP). Please read the documentation that comes
with DOSPPPD for an explanation of the terminology.

Most people can get their modem to dial their ISP's number, but then expect
to see a terminal screen in which to enter all of the login information.
This is NOT needed when using DOSPPPD, since it relies on a mechanism called
a 'Login Script' to perform this function.

A Login Script is a series of phrases that the server sends to your computer,
and the phrases that your computer sends back as a result. If you have
difficulties with deciding which phrases are sent by your ISP's server, and
what you should reply, contact your ISP and request that information from
them. Then, run PPPTERM and try the sequence of expected strings, and replies
to see if you can achieve a successful login.

Once you can get a successful login (you can tell because the ISP's server
will start sending you a bunch of funny characters once the network
connection is fully operational), try again but press the F10 key _before_
you start typing something. When you exit PPPTERM by pressing CTL-Z, you will
have a file called LOGIN.PPP which contains the phrases needed to assemble
your login script. The ones to the left of the '|' are sent by your ISP, and
the ones to the right are the ones you replied. In other words, they should
be the 'Expect/Send' pair needed by SETUP to prepare the login script.

GETTING STARTED

The first thing you should do after you start SETUP, is go to the Utilities
Menu and choose 'Checklist'. This will print a checklist that you should
fill out _before_ going any further. Even if you are an expert PC user,
filling out this form will help you in making sure that you have all of the
information that is needed to achieve a successful installation. Although
some information is not needed to use DOSPPPD, it will be invaluable if you
have problems and have to write Toni asking for assistance. So please, fill
it all out.

ENTERING INFORMATION

In the Configuration Menu, there are three options: Hardware, Network, and
Login. Fill them out in that order.

If you completed the checklist mentioned before, you should have all of the
information needed to enter the required information.

Immediately after you select the Hardware option, SETUP will ask you if you
want it to try to detect your modem, so that it can configure the port and
IRQ automatically. This is a process that's included only as a convenience
feature, and may not always detect your modem. Before answering 'yes' to the
question to detect your modem, make sure:

1. If running Windows, no other program is using your modem.
2. If running plain DOS, no TSR's are grabbing your modem port.
3. If external, your modem is turned on.
4. No two devices are sharing the same IRQ.

In the unlikely event that SETUP does not detect the presence of your modem,
then you can still enter the information by hand when the form appears for
you to fill out.

After filling out all three forms: Hardware, Network and Login, got to the
Generate Menu and choose Generate All. This will create all files that are
needed by DOSPPPD to run.

Exit the program, and run DIALER.BAT. This should make your modem dial and
connect to your ISP.

Please make sure that you have also read and understood the documentation
that comes with DOSPPPD. You can always check the files that were generated
by SETUP and modify them manually. DO NOT modify any files with the extension
.STP because SETUP will get confused next time it is started. They are not
part of the DOSPPPD configuration files.
