My beloved, long-suffering, globe-trotting 1400 LT is not at all
well, and I wonder if anyone can advise -- it's been to the
beach and back (literally!) many times since 1986, without a
cough or a sniffle (and the screen-brightness is/was still fine,
by the way), but three weeks ago when I turned it on, it just
gave a feeble beep and the screen sort of half lit up but it
didn't go through the rest of its usual welcoming beepity beep
routine -- it just sits there with its dim, blank screen.. The
"low battery" light keeps blinking, even though it's plugged in
with its adaptor. Well, of course I have unplugged it by NOW
<g>... Anyway I am very fond of my Tandy, the way people are
fond of their 1974 Dodge Darts, and I would hate to just junk
it. Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong with it? If
it's likely to be just the adapter itself, I guess I will steel
myself and buy a new one from RS (they say it'll take two weeks
and I haven't even ASKED how much...). What do you think?

This is my first visit to the forum -- surprised and delighted to
see so many people still have 1400 LTs!!

Hi! I'm online almost exclusively with my 1400 because my husband
monopolizes the pentium. I've got just the original machine, with
a 2400bps modem. I don't know if this will help, but I had
similar troubles and just needed to replace the battery. When the
old battery gave out, the machine didn't work right on the ac
adapter unless I unplugged the battery. So, try turning it on
without a battery inside. If this works, you're stuck with either
running ac only, or calling tandy for a new $89 battery. Also
check the adapter. Many off the shelf adapter plugs will fit into
the jack in the back, and sort of work, but the tandy one is a
funny voltage and the only one that works well. Good Luck!

As you can see, I'm also an infrequent visitor, but glad to
help!
