Bob,

If I remember correctly, I believe you said that an external
modem seemed to give problems using Windows-based terminal
programs or that ext modems need some special tweaking to operate
properly. I purchased a 28800 external softmodem to free up an
expansion port and find that what you said seems to be quite
true. I have not been able to use two terminal programs as the
system locks up after log-on, and some- times, even log-on fails.
However I can use a dos-based terminal program to access most of
CIS. Of course this means I haven't been on the www for the last
3 weeks or so. Have you found a solution to the problem for your
modem? thx, -ph

Paul, I don't remember this discussion especially about an
external modem, since the only computer that I use an external
modem on, is my trusty old Model 4 computer. The key to using an
external high speed modem, is mainly that the computer IO port
must be able to handle this speed. Other wise you can go no
faster than my Model 4, which is 9600 baud. My complaint lately,
has been with modems which will only run under windows, or the so
called Win Modems. These modems have some of the things that are
needed to make it run, not built into the modems, but is instead
found somewhere in the windows environment. As such the modems
are not usable in the DOS enviroment. I have one of these
modems, but fortunately for me, the manufacturer also included
drivers for the DOS environment. As such I am using this modem
not only in DOS, but also in Windows and OS/2. From all of the
complaints that I have seen elsewhere, I am counting my
blessings.
You seem to have the opposite problem here. I am not a
windows guru, but from the messages that I have seen on this
problem in the TAPCIS forum, you may need to set the windows ini
files to control the comm port and interrupt settings for your
modem. May I suggest that you visit the TAPCIS forum, and peruse
the messages relating to the use of modems under the window
environment.

Well, I'm hard pressed to find the time at present to go
searching for solutions to the problem(s), but if/when I do find
a workable fix I'll let you know how it turned out. I suppose I
could re-install the older 14400 internal card, but don't have
the time for it this week. Thx for the Tapcis suggestion. -ph
