Hi,

I have a Tandy 4016SX with 4MB RAM on the motherboard (4 1x9 70ns
chips). I want to upgrade to 8MB RAM (2 4x9 or 2 4x3 chips).
Computer City was running a sale on the chips so down I went to
buy the chips. I installed 2 4x3 4MB, 70ns SIMMs in the 1st 2
memory banks, set the CMOS to 7168 (per the on-line help file)
but the PC would not recognize the extra memory. I've tried
several different chips and different CMOS settings to no avail.

Does anyone have specific knowledge on how to upgrade memory in
this Tandy model? I'm starting to suspect that memory beyond 4MB
must be done on an expansion RAM card...I had a model 2500 like
that.

I've tried calling Tandy Service but cannot get anyone to call
back. The local stores don't even know what a model 4016SX is
much less how to upgrade the memory.

Any help would be appreciated.

The Tandy 4016SX takes either 236K or 1M SIMMs (1x9). Beyond the four
sockets on the motherboard, you need an expansion board. Tandy originally
offered catalog nbr 900-2395 ($160 in 1991), which was replaced with an
STB board the next year (cat nbr 900-2400, $260 in 1992). Both are now
discontinued, but you should be able to pick up a bus memory board (or
special order from Tandy).

If you have a fax machine, you can get the memory expansion details
from Tandy FaxBack. Call (800) 323-6586, reply "1" to the first two voice
prompts, then enter the document number(s) and your fax phone number as
directed. For 4016SX memory expansion, the document nbr is 1564.

Hi Barry,

Thanks for confirming what I was afraid of. I've got 4 1x9's on
the main board now and want to upgrade to at least 8MB to get
Windows 3.1 to run a little better.

Regarding the Tandy boards...do you know if the 4016SX REQUIRED
the TANDY board or will any RAM card do? Boca used to make a
line of RAM expansion cards.

Thanks again.

If you order a memory expansion from Radio Shack, the request goes to
"Third Party Products", indicating they'll supply someone else's board. If
you pick up an off-the-shelf board, just confirm your return priviledges in
case there's some incompatibility.
