Nah, I didn't think you were judging me, Ken, just offering good advice for
me and any others in eyeshot. I *never* buy anything rashly, but do you know
anybody who needs a crate full of dead $10.00 walkman type radios? :)

I'm not a big fan of mail order either. I like Tandy because I can go `get
in their faces' if I have to, and even more because I've never had to. My
first Coco will be ten years old this autumn and still works fine despite my
frequent `all thumbs' hacking and soldering jobs on it.

Odd that I hadn't noticed our names, especially as I have a couple of friends
here named Ken and people do joke about the rhyme, as in Ken and Ben the
Flower Pot Men. ;)

Is it a problem because of the Zenith's blue/white screen?? And if so is thier

I'm using an Intel 8MHz co-processor running at 8 MHz with no problems.
I do have to disable the 8K cache occasionally for some software to run
properly though. I bought the 8 slot backplane from a company called ERACO.
I don't know if they still have any but try them at (619)679-8360. It was a
while back. I used the 36 conductor ribbon cable from RADIO SHACK and sand-
wiched it to make the 62 conductor cable. I also used a 72 pin edge connector
card from Rad Shak and cut away 10 contacts to make the end to connect to
the passive backplane board. If you want to be neat buy the PC/XT plug-in
board (2) they sell at 30 bucks a pop. They also sell the 62 position PC/XT
bus card edge connectors so you can build your own passive backplane. At
3 bucks a piece an 8 slot plane would cost 24 bucks plus the board to mount
them on.

No EMS can be added the the 1000 TX, unless you buy an expanded memory board,
and that will vary on them how much they hold. I've seen one in a copy of PCM
Magazine, called the 'Micro Mainframe 5150T Expanded Memory Board' that has 2
meg of RAM installed. It's $249.00 and can't be expanded any more. I think
they have just recently come up with a 4-meg version too. But sorry, no ems

I don't know if either compression program will work for you, Mary, but
perhaps archiving some directories can get you some space. As MISAL wrote in
PCM a few months ago, it works best if you compress MANY directories and use
batch files to unpack them to a temporary directory, use the program, and
repack them with updated data files, etc. Its even free if you use the LHA
archiver.

I've tried a few experiments so far but I'll soon have to go whole hog. I
seem to be constantly house-cleaning to keep 7 or 8 Meg free on my 40 Megger.
As I'm too cheap (read poor <g>) to pay the Canadian price for Stacker, I
think I'll be compressing my drive the archiver way.

both are dangerous. If *anything* goes wrong, you lose your HD data.

MS-DOS 6.0 will include Stacker as part of the package. In prelim reports
it is said to integrate very well with the new DOS. Were it me <g>, I would

just runs the same .exe file with a single parameter to specify video, like
`golf t'(Tandy), `golf v'(VGA),etc. Only the Tandy request seems to bring
along the tune, from a file called TSOUND.DM, no doubt. All of the game's
play sounds are common (in the .exe, probably). The theme only played during
the set up phase (choosing course, opponents, etc.) so I guess its no GREAT
loss. Thanks anyway!

Hmm... well, somewhere on PC-Link, there's a text file explaining the
differences between them...

Next time I get on, I'll see if I can find it. It passed by my eyes once, but
it was before I got the upgrade.

One thing I will say about the 128K upgrade:

Some programs look for the video to be located in a certain portion of
conventional memory, on the Tandy 1000's. When you put in the 128K upgrade,
it can't find the video at that address because the video memory has been
moved up into the new chips.

Most programs accessing Tandy's graphics don't do this, but some do.
A game from Disney comes to mind, but I can't think of the name of it offhand.

The only thing that was proprietary on the EX/HX is the expansion bus and the

John, I have successfully made the change to MOUSER.BAS that you suggested.
Since I use the Color Mouse with the program, I had not encountered the
problem you mentioned with the cursor "wrapping" when it reaches the edge of
the screen. By the way, the article fails to mention that you must move the
cursor to the edge of the leftmost toolstrip or to the menu at the top and
then press F1 to enter the toolstrip or menu, make your selection, then toggle
F1 again to get back into the drawing area. The new problem I have encountered
is that paint "leaks" and fills the entire screen even if there are no breaks
in the shape to be filled either with paint or pattern paint. Do you have a

Well since COM1 and COM3 share an interrupt and COM2 and COM4 share an

as COM1 or COM 2 at the same time they're trying to use it.

     From: KC8HN To: DROM

Drom,
I used to have a Tandy 2000 and ran into the same problem in finding
software that would run on it. I realized that I would have to write my own,
even before I purchased it. I did find a very nice Basic Language compiler.
It is ZBASIC-PC/386. There is a 16-bit and a 32-bit compiler included in the
package. The company address is below.

32 Bit Software, Inc.
3232 McKinney
Lock Box 14
Dallas, Texas 75204

(214)-720-2051 (general)
(214)-720-2052 (administrative)
(214)-720-2053 (technical support)

For Orders Only: 1-(800)-322-4879

The Current version has coprocessor support, gif and pcx support, and many
other features. It is probably the only BASIC compiler on the market that
supports the 2000. If you can find a copy of generic Turbo Pascal v. 3, it
will also work on the 2000. Mix Software's Power C Compiler also works, as
does their Split screen editor. Forget Microsoft. Wordstar 6 can run on the
2000 as well. I'm not sure about Wordstar 7. Wordstar 4 runs on the 2000.
I suspect that most of the software you will find, will be used. The 2000
was a good system. I chose it over the original 1000 as I want fast
throughput and sacrificed compatibility. My only regret was buying the
floppy system and adding the hard disk later (far too many problems).
I found the address for Mix Software:

Mix Software
1132 Commerce Drive
Richardson, Texas 75081

Voice: (214)-783-6001
  Fax: (214)-783-1401

Power C compiler: $19.95
Power Ctrace Debugger: $19.95
Split Screen Editor: $19.95

These prices are as of August 1, 1991. I don't think that they have
changed. This information is valuable to ALL 2000 users.

Yes, I got the BASX2VGA.ZIP file, I've been trying to get
SCRAMBLE and DRAWFLAG to work, I think there is a problem with
using BSAVE in the EGA mode (Mode 7). I can't get a decent image
from it. It may have something to do with the way EGA and VGA
remaps the video memory. I believe that most of the trouble is
resulting from that.

I think my problem with my joystick is either the resisters in the
joystick or the joystick port of my Sound Blaster card. I can
use C routines to read the joystick, and I get a range of 6 to
350 for each direction (it should be 0 to 255).

I don't know why paint is leaking. The paint command in Basic is
used for that function, and as such should function properly.

TO ANYONE:

Does anyone know the correct parameters to use with the BSAVE
(and BLOAD) command to save an EGA resolution (320x200x16) image
to disk? All I've been able to get is a blank screen. Thanks in
advance.

Yes you "should" be able to use any board--if it fits--which is the big problem
unless you want to pay $300 for the "Slot Box". I am only aware of 3 boards
that
fit in the 3/4 length slots of the 1000 series
1. Micromainframe bd. but only lim 3.2 hardware and 2MB unless you pay big
bucks for the 2MB daughterboard.

2. Invisible EMS board. Hardware 4.0 but expensive($220 0K) and 2MB using
1MB DRAMs or 8MB using expensive and scarce 4MB DRAMs

3. Acculogic RAMPAT!-Plus. Hardware 4.0, 2-16MB using 1 or 4MB SIMMS. Can
also be used in 16 bit slot to provide extended memory. $140 mail order.

1 and 2 work in 1000sx/tx. 3 does not and I think it is because of the built-
in Tandy video because of my experiences with the TX. Adding a VGA card did
not help in the SX(wasn't able to try in TX).

Procomm Plus is a decent comm program (in fact I'm using it to
upload this post).

The standard settings are:

  Parity: None
  Wordsize: 8 bits
  Stop bits: 1

  Emulation: VT100
     or NONE
     or TTY

That last ("TTY") is probably the best choice for screening out
against faulty emulation problems. Make sure the Delphi Term is
set to NONE or UNKNOWN.

That is for most connections. I dial in via Tymnet and Telenet
(aka: SprintNet) and use those settings on both. Those should be
the only settings that would result in the effects you've
witnessed (I think...<g>).

Another possibility is that line noise might be really bad on
his lines, or the one he is connecting to. His phone line would
be really scratchy on voice calls if it's his line. Has he tried
any local BBSs to see how well things work there? If he can use
BBSs with no trouble, then I'd suspect the number he uses to
access Delphi.

Finally, he might have a bad modem. It happens rarely, but not
rarely enough, that a bad one slips by the Quality Control
people.

Good luck!

Kudut,
All I have left is the Pocket Computer 3. I had too much frustration with
my other systems. I sold the 2000 to get a better printer and HT (already
had 1400LT due to 2000's HD problems). Then I wound up with the 1400HD and
no longer had the LT. Couldn't replace the 20MB HD, so I sold the 1400HD and
bought a used AT compatible (DTK Tech-1260).
This brought me back to full 16 bit and more options. I currently have a
Trident 512K SVGA card and 2400bps modem installed. Also have a 42Mb and
20Mb hard disks installed. both of them are MFM. The floppy/hard controller
is built into the motherboard, so I can't go to IDE. For myself, this is
fine. Both of my drives are stacked. I also have a the Samsung Syncmaster 3
SVGA monitor. As you can see, my system is a hodgepodge of components.
If you want to look for used Tandy, check out the classifieds on PC
Compatibles sig. I may be in the market for another 42Mb MFM drive in a few
months, or I'll buy a couple of Microscience 85Mb MFM drives. That would
satisfy my storage needs for the next 20 years.
Unfortunately, I have other priorities right now. Other than Tandy's
engineering approach to computers, they are VERY good systems. I just don't
like to pay $1180 for a 10 meg hard drive (like I did for the 2000). Tandy
always does something proprietary to it 1000 motherboards. This makes it
frustrating when trying to upgrade.

Chuck.

Susan,

I realize that this is a somewhat tardy response to you problems with running
PCM Mag programs on VGA, but maybe I have a possible solution to your "Paint
Bleed-Over" problem.

If you have the June '89 issue of PCM, read my letter to the editor
concerning paint bleed-over problems. In short, I found that programs that
experienced the problem on my 1987 vintage 1000TX with Tandy's upgrade of
GW-BASIC to Version 03.20.21 (which I believe is the version used on later
1000TL's & 1000SL's) ran fine when I used the GW-BASIC Version 03.20.01 that
was originally bundled with my 1000TX. So, if you can somehow beg, borrow,
or steal a copy of GW-BASIC 03.20.01, put a copy on the same diskette with
those programs that exhibit the paint bleed-over problem and see if it solves
the problem. In my case, I specifically had problems with Loren Snyder's
SEASEARCH.BAS and also a slot machine program called, I believe, BANDIT.BAS
from some later issue which escapes me at the moment.

Hope this helps.

As a side note, you can tell from my DAIRYLADY name that we are dairy farmers;
we belong to a management service known as Dairy Herd Improvement Association
which provides computerized records on a member's herd. In the past, all
records for processing have been submitted on paper forms, but now people are
invited to submit these records via modem to the mainframe at North Carolina
State University. About two weeks ago, we decided to make the changeover, so
I have been learning to use that software program. Test days (when a tech-
nician visits the farm to weigh each cows milk during milking and take samples
for component testing at the lab) occur once a month. Yesterday was our first
on-line test, in which the milk weights and status changes for each cow were
uploaded from our computer here, to be followed in less than 24 hours with the
lab results. Tomorrow we are supposed to be able to download the results to
our computer which means a turnaround time of about 48 hours rather than the
7 to 9 days of waiting for results in the mail. Then we can perform all sorts
of "what if" functions on these results to help us manage our herd better. If
there are any dairy farmers out there who are not on DHIA, I urge you to do
it right now, especially if you have a computer!

I grew up in dairy country (Michigan). While we didn't actually
do any farming ourselves our property was surrounded on all sides
with farms, dairy and otherwise.

I remember being impressed with how modern dairy farming had
become, even then. Using a modem to speed the process of
analysis seems like one of those "Why didn't I think of that?"
type things.

People often underestimate the abilities of Tandy computers.
Especially something like the Color Computer. Both the computers
in our home are Tandy computers. While I sometimes wish for a
little more power, it isn't because the computer was sold in a
Radio Shack. The T1000SX is six years old, and hasn't ever even
needed a new RAM chip, or any other service (I take that back, I
had the monitor DeGaussed once).

The new 486 based models from Tandy really look impressive. I'd
pit a Tandy computer up against any other make anyday. They
work, and they keep on working.

Well Mark, If you wish to use a Joystick with a Tandy 1000, you have to buy
one that uses the Built in ports. Game ports on Cards conflict with the built
in ports and either one or the other must be disabled. Now since the cards
can be disabled with jumpers or by simply removing the card, that's the port
best disabled. The Game ports that are built into the 1000 Series of Tandy
can't be disabled without cutting things on the motherboard and unless you
have it done professionally at the repair center, this kind of disabling
voids any warantee you may have. Heck, Joysticks for Tandy 1000's are dirt
cheap! Spend the $20 and get a Tandy Stick for the Tandy machine.

Susan,

Upon giving it further thought the last several days, I'm not so sure the
paint bleedover problem you're having is related to the GW-BASIC version.
However, if RS can get you a copy of Version 3.20.01, it might be worth the
time to give it a try.

I, too, upgraded my 1000TX to a VGA package a couple of months back, but I
haven't tried all my PCM programs yet. Of those I've tried I was able to
convert most successfully, but in the case of a few I just simply gave up.
After reading about your attempts I tried "SEASEARCH" and it ran fine (using
GW-BASIC 3.20.01, not 3.20.21). In the case of the slot machine game,
"BANDIT", I got error messages which indicates that I'll have to do further
investigation. Those are the two games I mentioned in my message in
reference to paint bleed-over problems.

I never pursued the PBO problem very much with my local friendly RS people
when I started experiencing the problem back in mid-1988. Every time I tried
to explain it to the RS personnel, their eyes would glaze over and I got the
impression their attitude was, "Thanks for comments, but no thanks." To
their credit though, they did give me a number for the Tandy Tech Support
line, but that didn't pan out either.

Good Luck. If I come up with any additional ideas I'll let you know.

Susan K.,

Just today I received the September issue of PCM and I noticed your letter to
the editor. I wholeheartedly support your complaint about the "Graceful
Exit" problem. I've been subscribing to PCM since early 1988 and the "GE"
problem has been bugging me since the start. I find it hard to believe that
the talented programers who have their programs published in PCM fail to
provide a "GE" to their programs. After I type in their programs, I usually
have to search for the additional statements to add in order to provide for
a proper exit. If for nothing else, it has taught me a little bit about
programming in GW-BASIC.

     PAINT BLEEDOVER
     From: DAIRYLADY To: STANB

Stan,

I believe there is something about the actual plotting of the pixels
with the DRAW statement that is affected by the difference between
CGA and VGA (EGA). It is just harder to find the solution in some
programs than in others. Two programs I have typed in besides MOUSER.
BAS which had problems are ROADSIGN.BAS and MATCHUP.BAS. Actually,
ROADSIGN even did it as published for CGA, but I didn't realize it
couldn't have been intended that way by the author until I made the
change to VGA. It is in the Feb. 1992 issue and, of all things, the
sign they chose to illustrate the article is one of the ones that
bleed. Here are the changes I made to that program:
20 DIM A$(22),A(22)
90 SCREEN 7:KEY OFF:CLS:PRINT" ROADSIGNS"
710 'DELETE this line altogether
730 PAINT(104,52),4,4:PAINT(124,80),4,4
820 LINE(160,88)-(170,110),0,BF
830 LINE(86,88)-(86,94),0:LINE-(80,92),0:LINE-(92,110),0:LINE-(102,
92),0:LINE-(96,94),0:LINE-(96,88),0
840 PAINT(92,106),0,0
850 CIRCLE(128,88),66,4
870 'DELETE this line altogether
880 LINE(104,44)-(176,108),4:LINE(92,52)-(168,120),4:PAINT(76,80),4,4
1500 LINE(128,50)-(128,36),0:LINE-(146,56),0:LINE-(128,76),0:LINE-
(128,64),0
1810 A$=INKEY$:IF A$="Y" THEN RUN ELSE IF A$="N" THEN SYSTEM ELSE 1810

I still have a tiny area of paint leakage in one graphic in MATCHUP
to figure out; but I have other, bigger problems to solve with that
program too, so I won't detail any changes in that one here just yet.

Since I am tight on disk space and since I keep every issue of PCM,
I never type REM lines when I type a program. Just make sure all the
GOSUBs and GOTOs refer to the first actual line of the subroutine.
Programs also run just a teensy bit faster this way!

Stan,

I was really surprised to see my letter in print! I wrote it as
additional things for the editors to consider and sent it in along
with the reader survey form.

Now that I have the modem, I have been going back through all the
issues that have anything in them about using a modem and communi-
cations programs. I found an article about the Telecom program in
DeskMate which really helped after reading that part of the DM manual.
Then I found an article in the Feb. 1992 issue of PCM about Messenger
Lite, which I downloaded on Saturday. Our friend "Switch Tech" told
me he put out a request for help on some of the programs - I'm in the
process of studying that information - on the PC Compat SIG, so I
looked that up, too. In among those messages, I found a bunch more
stuff on MLite. After reading it, I decided to write my messages in
ASCII in DeskMate text, then import them to MLite for sending, because
the editor in the program evidently has some annoying problems. I'll
probably register my copy anyway, because it saves me precious AT&T
time being connected to Telenet from out here in the country, where no
"local access number" is local! For me, it is cheaper to use an out-
of-state access number in conjunction with Reach Out America, but
still very expensive if I do everything while on line as I have been.

I keep thinking it would be a lot easier to work with the DRAW state-
ment if I could find a pad of graph paper that has the row and column
numbers of the screens laid out on it, instead of having to use a
ruler and scratch paper. It takes too long just to get started.
If I draw the grid in pencil it erases along with the sketch when I
need to make a change - if in ink, it usually smears.

     From: DAIRYLADY To: SANDLINJ

John,

I have the SCRAMBLE.BAS program running beautifully! I have printed
out a listing of it with your modifications and will be spending some
evenings studying why they work. ONECARD.BAS now works but it does it
somewhat differently than it used to. Also, those "Out of memory in
(line)" messages appear if the game lasts very long, like some of the
ones for which readers reported fixes in Letters to PCM. I am just
glad to have it running again, though, and thank you.

I looked into the PC SIG to see your discussion there. I am intrigued
by the mention of the OUT statement, because I ran across it for the
first time ever when typing KIDKAD.BAS. I looked it up in the three
books I have, A Practical Guide to the Tandy 1000TL, Graphics & Sound
for the Tandy 1000 by Bill Barden, and Using BASIC by Rugg & Feldman.
They basically only make a brief description of the statement and an
example of syntax, but never show how or when it should be used or
what it does exactly. I notice you have used it in fixing the two
programs, too. So now I am looking for a better book to teach me more
about these apparently obscure things. I hope that book doesn't turn
out to be the one by David Lien that was published for Tandy, because
it is out of print and out of inventory!

I have a question about something else you mentioned - changing the
size of DIM statements: I had done this in some of the programs I was
able to fix myself, based on a letter in PCM where a reader was trying
to change QUEST.BAS to run on VGA. He had contacted the author, and
one of the things he suggested was changes to some of the DIM
statements dealing with DRAW. The changes I made to other programs
were by-guess-and-by-golly based roughly on the before-and-after ratios given
for QUEST. Is there some kind of rule or formula for deciding just how much is
enough, and not more than necessary?

RE: BASIC to VGA Changes (Re: Msg 21394)
     From: SANDLINJ To: DAIRYLADY

Susan,

As far as I could tell, the changes to ONECARD were cosmetic, the
PAINT command was leaking due to "holes" in the borders of the
shapes on the cards. I made the changes because I watched some
borders drawn, then painted over and lost. When I filled in the
breaks on the borders (to my tastes, anyway) the output looked
better.

I got the OUT command from JEFFMORRIS. I knew about the command,
and have used it once or twice before, but this is the first time
I used it that constructively. Jeff told me that the VGA (and
EGA) modes store the image differently and that the BSAVE (and
BLOAD) command wouldn't work with out using OUT.

What OUT is is a tool for accessing data on I/O ports that BASIC
doesn't directly support. (You'd use INP to get data from such
an I/O port). It is similar to the POKE command, but instead of
memory you're addressing the I/O ports. In this case we only
needed to send commands to the VGA card, to tell it to switch
"planes" of video memory, so that the BSAVE command and BLOAD
commands could function. (You've no doubt noticed that this
technique requires four *.PI? files as a result of the plane
switching).

For more information on ports, you'd have to look at the PC
Programmers manuals and guides (along with the programmers guides
for any I/O cards in the system, like a Sound Blaster, or VGA).

On the DIM statements, I used trial and error, increasing the
amount of the statement by 10 each try. Once I stopped getting
the error, I backed off the number by one until the error
returned. Then I set it back up one higher.

Like this:

   10  DIM GREY(105)     ->   ERROR!
   . . .
   10  DIM GREY(115)     ->   ERROR!
   . . .
   10  DIM GREY(125)     ->   NO ERROR!
   . . .
   10  DIM GREY(124)     ->   NO ERROR . . .
   . . .
   10  DIM GREY(119)     ->   ERROR Returns!
   . . .
10 DIM GREY(120) -> NO ERROR, this is where it stays.

I don't know the formula for figuring this out ahead of time
since my programming of VGA is limited to C (where the library
takes care of the proper memory allocation). [and that's why I
had to go for help!] But I'm sure there must be some formula
(I'm picturing programmers every where using my hunt and peck
method of determining the value - scary thought! <grin>)

I haven't looked at David Lien's book on Basic. I probably
should have!

I still haven't puzzled out why the paint is leaking on that one
program, my guess is that the structure you are trying to fill
has an invisible hole that the paint gets through.

Susan,

From David A. Lien's book, "Learning BASIC For Tandy Computers" on the OUT
command:

OUT (1000 Series only)
Let's see what OUT does. Put on your flying helmet, and type in this
program:

     10 FOR X=0 TO 64
     20 OUT 192,X
     30 NEXT X
     40 RUN

.. and RUN

Putt. Putt. Putt.

When we send data OUT of port 192, it goes to the Computer's Sound Generator.
The rapid changing of values in the FOR-NEXT loop causes the "putting" noise
you heard after you typed RUN. Press CTRL-BREAK to stop the noise.

In addition to port 192, ports 193 to 199 are used in sound generation. Feel
free to experiment on your own with these OUTports creating new sounds as you
go. Pressing CTRL-BREAK will stop any sounds that you may produce --- but
bring along some cotton for your ears just in case.

[This is the only reference to the OUT command in Lien's book.]

Lien's book got me started in understanding BASIC programming, but I sure
wish I had a more thorough, more authoritative reference.

I added a Micro-Mainframe board to my 1000TX about a year ago. I got it
from MicroSystems up in York Springs, PA (I recommend them highly). Since it
was, as I said, about a year ago my memory may be a little shakey. In any
case, there wasn't much involved in adding it. It came packaged with a
couple of device drivers to be placed in my DOS directory and invoked in my
CONFIG.SYS file: one for RAMdrives and one for a printer spooler. Also
included were a couple of utility .EXE files to show memory usage, etc.

In summary, I'm glad I added it to my 1000TX, I had no problem whatsoever
installing either the hardware or the software, I've had no problems using
it, and it's the best money I've spent on my 1000TX. I use it as follows:
one small RAMdrive (to hold a copy of COMMAND.COM and a copy of my BATCH
files), one large RAMdrive (yes, you can set up several) (for copying files
& doing small editing jobs, etc.), and the rest of the memory space I use for
a diskcache. Before I added it to my system I used to have to go through
some real gyrations to free up conventional memory for several of my kid's
games, but no more now that I can use EMS for some of the system functions.
I can still use several can't-get-along-without TSR's and still have about
575Kb conventional memory at bootup. And, that's running DOS 3.2.

If you have any more questions let me know. I'll try to help all I can.

Susan,

I believe you are correct about the difference between pixel drawing in CGA
and VGA (or EGA, for that matter). The problem I experienced with the
Tandy upgraded GW-BASIC I *believe* revolved around their added support for
EGA.

One other (harder) way I solved the problem in the SEASEARCH program was by
changing one of parameters in the PAINT statements. And that allowed me to
run it successfully under the upgraded GW-BASIC. Nevertheless, I found that
in most cases, the easy way was to revert to the older version of GW-BASIC.
(You see, a lot of these problem programs were probably written under the
older version.) I'll look up what I did to the PAINT statements and get
back to you. I've got to go up to Boston for meetings several days next
week, the week of 8/30, so I might not be able to get back to you until later
