Mike,

If I were to add a 120 MB Hard drive to my 1000 TL/2 system,
currently using MS-DOS 3.30, would there be any problem with the
system reconizing the additional partitions formated with the 32 meg
max allowed under MS-DOS 3.30? Does using the FDISK.COM file
program under 3.30 allow the user to assign the partition ID, ie A>,
B>, C>, E>, etc. At present I have A> as 5 1/4 floppy; B> as 3 1/2
floppy; C> is 20MB SmartCard and D> is ROM. I was looking at
up-grading to a higher level of MS-DOS, but found out that I would
loose the ability to boot to deskmate using D> ROM setup. Since our
PC is used by all family members, I don't want to loose the auto
boot up to Deskmate feature. Could you comment on these questions
and offer any other suggestions regarding upgrade to higher level of
MS-DOS.

                                        --- Vince ---

The T2000 will not work with the higher versions of MS-DOS.

The MS-DOS 2.11 was written specially for the T2000. (When the
T2000 was made, clones were not as prevelant. Almost compatibles
were - like the Sanyo, for instance). The higher versions of
MS-DOS have all been written with TRUE compatibility in mind
(with only minor modifications for the vendor specific product).

Sorry to bear such bad news.

Depends on the hard drive technology, Vince. A 120 meg IDE, SCSI, ESDI drive
would have to be the *first* drive -- the hard card (I assume is an MFM)
might find hard times competing.

The best advice I can give you is to call DCS (800-536-3539) and ask. They
specialize in this area.

If you want to use a 1200bps modem with the Model 100, and the modem has
a female connector too, then you need a gender changer for the cable you have
or you will need a new cable. You'll have to switch the Model 100 to use
the external modem rather than the internal. Hope you have the manual. The
M100 though will not actually operate at 1200bps, more like 600 bps because
of limitations with the LCD display. Also, if the modem is a portable type
or pocket modem, make sure it has a battery or external power supply. If
it is a pocket modem and does not have a battery, then it works off the
phone line, and RS232 port, and IT WILL NOT work on a Model 100. For all
practical purposes RS-232 and RS-232C are the same thing.

The Tandy 1000 Sl doesn't have the 128K upgrade option if I recall, only the
TL series and maybe the RL Series has this option. Your friend can use the
SETUPSL.COM program to lower the amount of video memory that the SL set's aside
for tandy graphics. I wouldn't reccomend using it with lower than 32K unless
he's not going to use Deskmate.

   6. Has been unable to format entire 40meg HDisk. Partition "A"
,32meg, formats. Partition "B" remains intact.

Hello Bri,
I'm new to MS-DOS too (also a CoCo 3er), but maybe I can help a little.
I THINK the 1000 RL is an 8088 processor with DOS 3.3 and CGA graphics.
I KNOW the 1000 RLX is a 286 processor with DOS 3.3 and VGA graphics.
Both have a few ports built in that clones may not have, but both are very
short on expansion slots (1).
As they are 1000s, they can probably use CoCo joysticks. I briefly looked
into both and instead lucked into a clearance center deal on an old 1000SX. No
DOS 5.00 or Windows or nuthin' but my CoCo pistol grip joystick works on every
game I've tried so far |)
I think with some careful shopping you might find a non-Tandy 286 clone with

low end VGA and lots of expansion slots at a price comparable to the RL(X). I
know you'll get more answers and advice if you post your questions next door in
the PC Compatibles Forum, too. Everyone who looks in here, and thousands? more,

hangs out there.
I think I THINK a lot more than I KNOW... Good Luck. Ben Ripley

character) that the VT-100 series of terminals send for the arrow
keys. If you told Delphi (not CrossTalk) that your terminal type
is UNKNOWN (the default), then it isn't interpretting the control
codes, just echoing back the visible characters.

Hope this helps (if you decide to change your terminal type
        SET TERMINAL VT100
or something like that at the main menu (SET in the Forums is
for TOPICS, not session settings). If that isn't exactly correct
(I'm not online to test it) you can follow the prompts after you
type: GO SET TERM

Don't forget to save the changes. ( type: /SAVE )

     Tandy 1000 memory upgrade
     From: MKOWIT To: ALL

Help! I recently inherited a Tandy 1000 (the 1st generation). It's an old
machine. It has a memory expansion card in it which expands the system
memory to 384K. The board has 128k (64k chips) on the board and 2 banks of
eight sockets each. Tandy says that you can only put 64k chips into the
sockets, which I've done. The total on the board is now 256K which when
added to the 128k on the motherboard gives 384K.

My question is this: Is there any way to use 256K chips in the sockets on
the board? Tandy (and 3rd-party suppliers) say that to expand to 640K I will
need an entirely new memory board costing $200. I'm hoping that there may be
some hardware fix to allow my old board to map in the 256K chips.

I've also seen 3rd-party memory boards for standard pc compatables which
would allow my to add up to 576K on the board with various configurations.
That board is only $20. However, I'm told that it will not work on the
Tandy 1000 because Tandy does something different with the way that they map
in the memory. If it's impossible to go past 384K with the current board
is there any way that I can us the pc compatable memory upgrade board?

I'm kind of new to MS-DOS and the Tandy 1000. I used to use a Coco 3 with OS9.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

-Mark

I have my TERM TYPE in Delphi set to VT100, Terminal Emulation
set to VT320 in my comm package, and have HOST ECHO set for

That puts the Delphi editor in full screen mode (the EDT editor,

     From: SANDLINJ To: FLEYDA

The editors (EDT and OLDIE) are throwbacks to the early mainframe
days (before personal computers were so prevalent). For the most
part they work like EDLIN. That is, they are line editors
(editing a line at a time). EDT can be put into FULL SCREEN
mode, but you must be in very specific modes for it to work.

Did you get the Delphi manual (by Micheal Banks)? That goes into
more detail than I have room for in an online message. To enter
the editor you type: EDIT. You can edit messages you've posted,
or create files for your workspace. EDT has several commands (in
line edit mode), some are:

<note: the EDT prompt is an '*'>

   -------------------------------------------
   > COMMANDS YOU CAN TYPE AT THE '*' PROMPT <
   -------------------------------------------
INSERT : Begin insert mode, where you enter new lines of
text. Press CTL-Z to exit Insert Mode.
DELETE : Delete line n. Also use -> DELETE n THRU x If
you don't specify n the current line is deleted.
SUBSTITUTE: changes text, use -> SUB/old-word/new-word
SUB/Hi/Hello <- replaces "Hi" with "Hello"
                If you use -> SUB/old-word/new-word/WHOLE
All occurances of old-word in the file are
                replaced with new-word.
MOVE : MOVE x THRU y TO z <- moves the block of text
between lines x and y to location starting at
                line z.
COPY : COPY x THRU y TO z <- copies the text on lines
                x through y to location z.
TYPE : Displays lines of text. TYPE WHOLE will type the
whole file. I think you can type a range (or
even a single line) with: TYPE x THRU y
                (or TYPE x)
REPLACE : REPLACE x THRU y <- deletes the block of text
from line x to y, then puts you into the INSERT
mode. Again, press CTL-Z to exit insert mode.
EXIT : Saves the file and exits the editor.
QUIT : Doesn't save the file, but does exit the editor.
HELP : Gives you some help on using EDT
CHANGE : Enters the full screen edit mode. Arrow keys
should work. [Backspace] places the cursor at the
beginning of the line. [Delete] removes the
character to the left of the cursor and pulls the
rest of the text left one character. Press CTL-Z
to exit CHANGE mode. This (CHANGE) is difficult
to use, and most people decide not to use it.
See message 20423 for the settings required to
                use this mode.

Note: You can enter as many lines into the file as you wish,
but each line is limited to 255 characters maximum.

Micheal Banks goes on to say the Digital Equipment Corporation
wrote EDT and has a comprehensive manual available. I don't know
how you'd get a copy of the manual. . . guess you'd call DEC and
ask for one.

QRAM manages memory above 640K on machines below the 386 status (QEMM386
takes care of this and the 486). It creates mappable memory page frames that
can be used to load programs (including the DOS kernel and buffers) into
the area above 640K -- saving the much needed conventional memory area.

Your machine must have at least 1 megabyte of memory to take advantage of
QRAM (or QEMM386).

     Connors drive..
     From: SKYLINE To: MISAL

HI Mike..
The Connors drive still not be seen by the TL/3 when hooked into the IDE port
on the motherboard.
I took it out and installed it into an IBM clone with an IDE hard/floppy
controller card and it then works..
So we formatted it and installed dos.. rebooted the clone and everything was
perfect..however,
When we removed it and reinstalled it back into the TL/3 the machine will still
not boot..it gets as far as the memory check for 640k and then gives us an I/O
error 8259.. which I am guessing is a bad hardware error since it does not see
the Connors drive as a Smart drive compatible drive..
Question is now, since the TL/3 only has 8 bit slots and the drive seems to be
one of the AT IDE drive types (type 17 standard setup in a compatible rom), do
we need to buy a special 8 bit IDE host card now to use this drive at all in
the TL/3 ?
It seems logical to me that this is the only solution since Tandy's IDE drive
port will accept nothing but XT type IDE style interfaced drives for some
reason..
What are your views on this and are there other possible solutions? besides
buying
a special host card from Connors for this great drive..

Have you run the SETUPTL program with the /A switch? This tells the
system that drives are present. You *should* be able to run that drive with
the IDE interface of the TL/3. The interface is just that -- an interface.
The drive itself actually contians the controller.

Now, the question of the drive being an AT or XT type (8 or 16 bit) is
something that I will have to check into -- I *think* that an IDE drive can
run with either bus -- if so configured.

Help.
I've recently aquired a soundblaster card for my TL/2 and am really happy
with the sound. But I'd really like to also use the joystick port on this
card which will allow me to use an IBM 15 pin D-sub joystick instead of the
trashy radio shack 9 pin joystick. But my TL/2 won't stop recognizing the
built-in joystick port and allowing me to use the port on the card. Does
anyone know of a way to "tell" my computer that it doesn't have a built-in
port so that it will access the soundblaster joystick port? This is really
driving me crazy as I've finally found an excellent stick and now can't use
it. Please, please, please help.

Just a stupid question:

. . . You did remove the joysticks from the Tandy ports,
right?

I never tried the SB in my wife's T1000SX, so I don't know if the
joystick port's disable or not. Works great on my T3000NL,
though. On the T1000SX I had problems with the game "Elite"
(space merchant simulation) where the joy stick would lock the
system if it was moved to a certain spot (which, lucky me, I
managed to find on a regular basis). With the SB on the T3000NL
I don't have that problem.

all the way up to 1024x768x16 colors now that I've upgraded the memory from

Well, your startup files look fine -- you need the SETUP file that *should*
have come with the machine. I suggest that you visit your nearest Radio
Shack Computer Center and ask for it (take a blank diskette with you -- may
times *good* R.S. people will simply make a copy for you).

Deskmate is booting from your ROM -- you need the SETUP program to disable
it.

I was saying that the slot box MAY not work correctly if the 286 EXPRESS
card is already installed in the Tandy. The 286 board is reported to be
noisy and do weird things with the bus signals and this causes the adapter
card for the Slot Box to mess up occasionally. Therefore it is the Express
Board that is causing the problem not the processor itself. It should work
with all the T1000 series as long as the 286 Express Board is not
installed.

the Card I have only goes to 512K and is supposed to support 640x480x256 colors
but for some reason it's BIOS is only reporting 256K to programs that do BIOS
calls. Anything that does an actual hardware call is seeing the additional 256K

I will try to explain what we did with the TL/3 with this Connors drive..
Without the drive cables hooked up to the motherboard, we ran the SETUPTL
program using the /A command after it in the Dos command line..
Then when we ran the program, we changed from Rom boot up to disk boot up and
opted not to look for autoexec files on the boot disk to make it simple.
Then we used the option to write the changes to rom and exited the setup
program.
Now, nowhere during the process did it ask about additional drives, or changes
to esisting ones during this setup run..is this a correct assumption that it is
automatically recognized or what?
After we hooked up the cable from the drive to the port on the motherboard, we
powered up, and then got the I/O error in 8259 which seems to be the hard
drive..
So what are we doing wrong or not doing as the case may be..??

OK -- the "older" TX (Says Scott and I believe him) did not have Deskmate in
ROM. Your CONFIG.SYS and/or AUOTEXEC.BAT is booting Deskmate *from* your
hard drive when the system is powered up. You must *edit* these two
start-up files in order to stop Deskmate from booting.

I may be backtracking a bit here -- can you do a low-level from the
controller or is the Conner an IDE (need refresher)? Can you get past
the initial I/O (8259) error and FDISK the drive?

You *may* need to (and it may not help) boot the computer without the drive
cables attached and then attach them **under power**. I have done this
before (do not recommend it except in extreme cases) and been successful
getting odd drives to work with seemingly incompatible systems (or
controllers). You would then run the SETUPTL, FDISK and DOS FORMAT the
drive. This **is** a bit risky!

The power plug for the drive can be plugged in before boot. The data
and control cables -- after power is on. All will go well as long as
you place the connectors on the card edges in a "straight line"
(to not short the traces).

Joel,

If you want to get rid of the Deskmate files from your hard drive, change
to your Deskmate directory and use the DEL *.* command ( make sure you are
in the Deskmate directory) as this command will delete all the files in the
directory. Then change to your root directory and use the RD command to
remove the Deskmate directory. All that is left is to edit out any Deskmate
commands in your Autoexec.bat file and Deskmate is history.

We can't get to anything with the drive hooked up..so I trudged into a Radio
Shack store
today and asked for some advice..since he told me they used Connors drives in
the TL/3 originally I thought I would have a better chance in getting some good
advice.
What I heard there shouldn't be repeated..but anyway, he basically said there
are some jumpers on the side of the Connors drive.
Of the set of 9 pins there, you have to figure out which are to be jumpered and
which are not..
Of course, it would have helped if we had some info on the drive but it seems
that Connors technicians are either ignorant or well trained (like Tandy tech
advisors) (hehe) and will not divulge any info over the phone. If we had known
about the total lack
of support for information that should have been originally supplied with the
drive, we would have never bought it !
For that matter, The Tandy would have been replaced with a clone that supported
any drive, not just a so called stupid Smart Drive !
If anyone has had a similar experience in getting a drive to work like the
Connors with a TL/3, please email me here..or call my BBS with the info..

     From: WILLIAMM To: ALL

I have a Tandy TX with a 40 meg hard card, 3 1/2" 720k drive (a) and a
5 1/4" 360k (drive b) and all of a sudden when I go to format a disk
in drive a (720k), all I can format it to is 360k. I have installed
Dos 5.0 about 3 months ago and have had no problems up to now. Also,
when I try to send text to my printer, either in an Ascii editor or with
a Word Processor, all my printer does is print out garbage. I have tried
to do all the above while using a clean boot disk and get the same results.
I ran all of my files through a Virus Scanner and none were detected. MY
printer prints fine in self-test mode. My modem obviously works fine.
Does anyone have any ideas on what the heck is going on? It is almost
like a virus but I didn't find any any and the symptoms were the same with my
boot disk. (write protected).
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

     From: SANDLINJ To: WILLIAMM

First, stop worrying about a virus. It is possible you have a
virus, but not really likely.

I don't know why the printer went wacky on you, but I think you
need a bios upgrade for DOS 5.0 to handle the 720K disk drive.
See, the Tandy version of MS-DOS 3.3 (or was it 3.2?) has the
support for the 720K drive built in (to avoid a bios upgrade I
suppose <shrug>). Since the DOS 5.0 upgrade (bought from a Tandy
store or not) does not include those "enhancements" you suddenly
loose some of the abilities of your TX. Scarry, isn't it!

Now the good news. Microsoft included a simple command (to put
in your config.sys - using a simple ASCII text editor (Like
EDIT)). It's called: DRIVPARM. I think all you need to do is
put one of the following lines into your CONFIG.SYS (third or
fourth line would be good):

 (1)
        DRIVPARM /d:1

That assumes that you want drive B: to be the "special" drive.
On my wifes drive that's all that is needed. (By the way,
replace the "1" with "0" (zero) if you want to fix drive A:
instead). DRIVPARM figures out that it is a 720K.

The other possibility, is to specify exactly what the drive is.

 (2)
        DRIVPARM /d:1 /f:2 /i

This specifies: "/d:1" = Drive B: (again "0" is A:), "/f:2" =
720K (3.5"), and the "/i" is to tell the system that the BIOS
doesn't know about 3.5" drives.

If you have to use the second line (I'd try the first line before
moving on to the second) then try it without the "/i" to see what
happens before putting in the whole bit. I think that you'll get
by with just the first line above.

I think I would need more information about your printer, and
printer port before making a guess about that.

BTW, my word is not GOSPEL, if anyone gives you different
information, try it out! Let us know what works!

Joel,

In addition to what mary said in post(20530) your # of files and # of buffers
that are set in your CONFIG.SYS file will affect your amount of Ram avilable.
Check to see that your Files= or Buffers= are not set too high. I know that
some programs require more files= and buffers= than others. I try to keep my
setting at Files=15 and Buffers=15. This generally satisfies most programs,
but if you find that a program needs more files/buffers allocated, you may
see a runtime error message or you may get a message to increase your files/
buffer settings in config.sys.

Hope this helps. --- Vince ---

Unfortunately the 3rd party memory board costs about the same as the Tandy

seem justified. Ideally, I would like to use the existing upgrade board.
If not, there are 3rd party memory boards for true compatables for just $20.

CMOS Memory would require a battery back-up and believe me, if there was
a battery anyplace on the motherboard or within 10 feet thereof, I would
of taken it out and thrown it against the wall. You are right though,
CMOS can cause you all kinds of problems.
Now let me explain to you, the best that I can what had transpired
in the last day or so. I checked again for a virus which proved futile,
I reformatted my harddrive and then restored hd using backups from about
2 weeks ago. The problem still existed with my disks, couldn't format
to correct drive capacity. I removed MsDos 5.0 and installed 3.3, problem
went away. Ok, so I reinstalled Dos 5.0 tried to format again, but the
same problem happened so I did add a drivparm statement in my config file.
The drives work fine now, but my question is, why did my drives even work
at all using Dos 5.0 for the last 2 or 3 months without a Drivparm in my
Config? As for my printer, "MURPHY'S LAW took effect and the printer went
down at the same time as my drives, causing me to believe that the 2 problems
were somehow related. It turned out that the cable just needed alittle
cleaning. What a Week this has been.

The Quick Basic DOS error trapping is handled by the ERR and ON ERROR

displayed (Abort, Retry, Fail - for instance). You need a QB add-on library
like PDQ in order to successfully trap most DOS critical errors.

     date/time
     From: BILLGRIMM To: ALL

I have a Tandy 1000 SL/2. It has 640K of ram, CGA monitor,
and a Delkin slotless clock. I have used the setup program on
the DOS disk so that the computer boots from ROM and the initial
start-up program is MS-DOS. I answered NO to the question of
automatic date/time prompt. If I use the setup program to cause
the computer to boot from Disk instead of ROM, I have to push
the enter key twice when it boots up. Once for the date, once
for time. Even though I answered NO to the question of automatic
prompt for date/time in the setup program. When it boots from
ROM the date/time prompt is NOT shown. Is there any way to
prevent the date/time prompt from coming up at start-up when booting
from disk? Am I doing something wrong or is this just the way
it is? The reason I ask is that I wanted to experiment with batch
files, especially autoexec.bat files. It seems to me that you
shouldn't have to push any keys if you have an autoexec.bat file.
Anybody have any suggestions?
   Thanks to any and all,

     Noisy Computer/Harddrive
     From: MARYV To: ALL

    Hello All -
I've noticed that my harddrive on my 1400 HD is making a noise every
time it is accessed. Now, I took it it to new nearest repair center, had
them "clean" it, do the once a year check over, and hopefully look for the
noise. I don't know what I paid the $37 for, because the dust is still on
the vents, and the hardrive still makes noise. Obviously, they didn't open
it up to check anything. I've had this machine for over a year now, and for
the most part it runs ok. But the noise bothers me, and I have to wonder
about the dust, etc. that is probably inside. Should I take it back and
complain, losing 3-4 days of working time (I use it every day at work), or
should I get the tech manual and open it myself to check it out?

Different question. Some time back I downloaded a program called
Tcache. It's supposed to use the extra 128k the Tandy 1400 has over 640 for

never was sure I read the program notes right. Is there any info on this

     RE: date/time (Re: Msg 20553)
     From: SANDLINJ To: BILLGRIMM

Hi, Bill.

From your message I will presume you do not, currently, have an
AUTOEXEC.BAT file. (Otherwise you should not have to press ENTER
twice to avoid the dreaded DATE/TIME pair).

First:

Did the Delkin slotless clock come with any software
(specifically, stuff to load the time to the system clock?). If
so, you'll have to invoke it during the AUTOEXEC.BAT so that your
system clock is correct. (That's how the slotless clock worked
in my old Tandy 1000 SX).

Let's assume that the program from Delkin is called AUTOTIME.COM
and requires a command line switch to tell it to run
automatically (with out user intervention) using the "/I" switch,
the AUTOEXEC.BAT would look something like this:

   @ECHO OFF
   PROMPT $P$G
   PATH=C:;C:\DOS;C:\OTHER
   AUTOTIME /I

Having an AUTOEXEC.BAT should defeat the DATE/TIME prompts. It
also sets the parameters you'll want for the duration of your
session.

I put the PATH command there because I think you'll want to learn
that one straight away. Same with the PROMPT command. If you
haven't already got them, let me recommend two books to you:

"MS-DOS volume 1: THE BASICS" by David A. Lien
"MS-DOS volume 2: ADVANCED APPLICATIONS" by David A. Lien

You should find these at a Radio Shack store. I think they are
the easiest to understand and get started with. The catalog
numbers are (in case you need to order them), respectively:

    25-1506 ("... The Basics")
    25-1507 ("... Advanced Applications")

And please feel free to return to this SIG to ask more questions,
any time!

A hard drive is 'sealed' -- there is precious little that you can do to

The 128K above the conventional 640K on the 1400 was designed to be used as
a RAMdisk (virtual disk - in memory). The cache program is designed to make
the read (sometimes write) access to the hard drive quicker (saves battery
drain, also). If you get a diagnostics program from the DOS Tools database
-- it will show you what is in memory. Your cache will have a device driver
that loads from CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT. If present in one of these
startup files -- it "should" be working -- the diag program will tell you.

I would tend to believe that the IDE and any HARDCARD type drive
will conflict with each other. I think the use the same address
locations. However, it might be possible to tell one or the
other that it is a secondary hard drive, and thus make it work.

I would seek out further advise, specifically: exactly how that

Boy, you and I get to talking all over the place. As for the noise, I
would describe is a whirring-whining noise, sort of like there's a cicada
trapped in the case. It could be the fan, I suppose. And I do know that
the hard-drive is sealed. But the fan, the floppy, etc. aren't sealed. And
as I work in a smokey enviornment, also with a fair amount of dust, I want
it cleaned out inside. I don't know how to do it myself (ever try to open
one of these things? Fort Knox should be so well protected!), but I had
hoped that the dealer would have done more than put a floppy in to check the
system, as it appears he did. Hell, with all the utilities I have access
to, I can do that!.
So, anyway, I'll call them back and b*tch nicely. I don't want to go in
and possibly screw something up doing so.
As for the frounding strap, yes, that may be what the noise is coming
from. But I would have to open the case to get at it, I think, I don't

The TX uses both the memory that it is ALREADY using AND the additional
memory for video. The problem with the hard drive if I'm not mistaking, is
the PUNY little power supply won't handle more than one hard drive, if you
use something like the Slot Box, or an external hard drive you shouldn't have

I left a note in the PC/Ibm forum about this, thought I would just leave on

it
at the local Tandy outlet store here in Fort Worth..got the documentation with
it and all. Anyway, it came with 640k of ram, he went out and bought 2 megs of
simms to upgrade the memory. Not Tandy sold chips..generic I guess. When he
installed the simms the machine recognized 1 meg and no more, he ran the setup
with same results. He called Tandy support, the gist of THAT conversation was
that he should have bought from Tandy (note too that the woman he talked to
insisted that 100ns chips were much faster that his 70ns chips). The question is

are there any dip switches/jumpers or what that have to be set for the 4000
to "see" the extra memory. He has tried almost every possible combination of
256k and 1 meg simms to make it work...nothing seems to change. Any help
would be greatly appreicated.......Larry

RE: Tandy 4000 memory (Re: Msg 20586)
     From: SANDLINJ To: YOB

I haven't looked "under the hood" of a T4000, but since my
T3000NL uses JUMPERs (not DIP switches) to set the memory option,
I would be willing to make the assumption (or has it become a
presumption?) that the T4000 has a similar setup. I wouldn't
know where to tell you to look, though, if it isn't mentioned in
any of the manuals that came with the machine.

If the manuals have any drawings of the motherboard, that would
be the place to start. Mine (the manuals for the T3000NL, that
is) shows a DRAM Bank Select jumper (there's actually two
jumpers). Look for those types of things.

It's possible that the memory can only be seen in certain
increments, as well. For instance, the valid choices could be
512K, 640k, 1M, 1.64M, 2M, 4.64M, 5M and 8M (those are the
values from the manual for my T3000). So if you haven't tripped
over a threshold value, the extra memory will not be seen. I
could have 3M installed, but my system might only "see" 2M (I
haven't tried this on my system, but I have heard of other
systems that had only fixed values that could be installed).

I beg to differ on that...I've run 2 Hard drives from the same controller in
both my old 1000(A) and my newer TL. The power supply won't support two
controllers, but 2 drives off the same controller it will support. I see no
reason why a TX which was newer than the 1000(A) can't run 2 drives off the
same controller. I was told not to run 2 drives on the 1000(A) and it's still
perking along just fine after over 6 years with 2 HD's (My brother now has it).
It's surely not reccommended, but it does work. Just depends on how daring you
wish to be. 8-)

Joel,
What kind of Controller card does your current HD use? I ran 2 HD's in
my Tandy 1000(A) for over 6 years off an RLL controller card. One was a 32 Meg
and the second was a 48Meg. The 1000(A) handled 2 HD's just fine. I now have
a 48Meg and a 64Meg running off an RLL controller in my Tandy 1000 TL. They're
daisy chained off the same controller card so the Power consumption is well
able to support them. Let me know what your setup is controller wise...Jax..

Just a question here Mary, but it isn't the whiring sound of the drive
spining up after it has shut down is it? The 1400 HD I have shuts the drive
down after so many minutes of inactivity to concerve battery strength (Even
though I never use the battery and it can't be set to stay running or so I've
been told). Is it that noise, or a different whirring noise that you're
hearing? Chat at ya later...Jax...

From what I've seen in the Source code that was included in that ZIP, it only
uses 64K of that 128K for it's cache. I haven't found anything to use the
other 128K so I just use the RAMDISK.SYS file which makes it all a 128K ram
drive. That's what they intended it for I assume since RAMDISK.SYS came with
it. Anyone else know of other stuff that'll use it? Jax...

Oops...make that "I haven't found anything to use the other "64K" not 128K
which is all there is above 640K on the 1400HD. Also, I know of no diagnostic
program that will even recognise the extra ram in the Tandy 1400 HD. I have
Norton's, QRAM's Manifest, PC Tools 6.0 and a little utility called MAPMEM.
None of them can see that 128K. Shame on Tandy! 8-) Chat at ya later TandyJax...

      Batch file info
     From: VINCEGORDON To: ALL

In trying to design a batch file to act like a macro, I find that I need
to enter some keystrokes from the keyboard in order to have the remainder
of the batch file to continue.

I am accessing the Graphics.com file from dos 3.30 and have to choose one
of the five type printer setups for the screen dump utility to use. At
this point the batch file will not proceed until the keystrokes are made.

I would like to accomplish the needed keystrokes within the batch file
but cannot until I can find a way to workaround the needed keystrokes
having to be done manually.

Can anyone help with this situation, or am I stuck with having to enter
the required keystrokes?

     From: RSALOMON To: ALL

I am having a problem with the A drive on a TL2 computer. That is the drive for
3.5 inch 720 k computers that comes with the computer. After booting up, I can
put a disk in the drive, and the computer will read it correctly.
However, if I change disks, the computer continues to read the disk that is no
longer in the drive. If I try to copy files on the latest disk, if tries to
copy files that were on the first disk, which results ultimately in error
messages.
Sometimes I can correct the problem by switching to another drive and then
going back to the A drive but other times I have to reboot to use the second
disk. And no matter whether I switch drives or reboot to correct, once I switch
disks again, I have the
same problem.
Any suggestions as to the cause of the problem or the solution? Thanks.

Vince-

I am unfamiliar with the specific keystrokes you are talking
about. But you should be able to redirect a file to act as input
for the Graphics.Com program. You build the file, using an ascii
editor, inserting exactly the characters needed (including the
carriage returns) into the file. Then type -

 GRAPHICS <INPUT.TXT

The GRAPHICS program would take the characters from INPUT.TXT as
if you typed them at the keyboard.

Or did I misunderstand your question?

It may be time to replace the drive. Sounds like the drive
doesn't notice that you've changed the floppy (it has a little
sensor that is supposed to notice that). I don't think it would
be cost effective to try to fix something like that (the service
call would be as much as a new drive).

John,

Thanks for the info. I tried it and it did not work at first, I forgot to move
the <INPUT.TXT file in my DOS directory. I had tried just about everything else

except redirecting a file as a way to input required keystroke info. Every-
thing works great now without having to manually insert needed keystrokes.

BTW how are things in Alamo City,--Regards from the Astrodome City.

Believe it or not, your problem is probably the drive cable. This problem
seems to haunt the tl2. The Radio Shack repair center should be able (but
perhaps not willing ) to conferm this. The Rsdio Shack store personell
should be willing to place a call to the repair center and ask if this
may be the cause and solution.

filling up the 85

given my habit of collecting software. I did add a co-processor and have
386MAX; between the two of them Windows and games have really speeded up. (All
this from a guy who started
