Your horizons may be soon be expanded in many wonderous ways. A company
called PC Enterprises (famous for its add-ons to the PCjr) will soon be
offering several expansion products for the EX an HX. Some of the products
include VGA/AdLib sound, internal hard drives, SCSI devices (CD-ROM, removable
cartridge drives), memory expansion, etc.

It's not just Tandy machines either, Julie. I'veseen the same problems
on other systems. I don't know what the exact problem might be, but it is
definitely a problem with DR DOS because generic MS-DOS purrs like a kitten
on all of these machines. I too gladly purged DR DOS from my Tandy and went
back to generic MS-DOS 5. Even so, I didn't see any significant reason to
use DR DOS - but I did see a few significant reasons not to use it. Namely
that of compatibility with hardware and software.

I don't know of anyone that has specifically replaced the 5.25-inch drive
with a 3.5-inch drive in the EX. But I don't forsee any problems doing so.
I mean the two drives types are practically identical except for the number
of tracks. At most you may need to add DRIVPARM to the CONFIG.SYS file to
tell MS-DOS you have a 3.5-inch drive. (I think DRIVPARM=/D:0 will do
the trick.)

Just a wild guess really, but I don't forsee power problems adding a secondary
hard drive. The two problems I do forsee are finding a place to mount it
(pizza boxes have very little room inside) and determining whether or not
the current drive can be daisy chained to a secondary drive. If you want
to persue this further, pop the case and let me know the manufacturer and
model number of the hard drive. I can then look up the specs for the drive
at work and let you know if it can be daisy chained (and the jumper settings).
I assume the drive is probably made by Seagate, or possibly Western Digital
since it is 85 megs and prior experience with Radio Shack -- Radio Shack
uses Quantum 52 and 105 meg drives in the 4000 series.

I have the 2500SX/20 also, I was told that the extra bay that sits below
the A drive is for an internal CD-ROM. I would think that if the power
supply could handle the CD-ROM it could handle the extra hard drive.

Like Greg said, the question is if you could fit another hard drive in that
slot. As you know the hard drive that is in there now sits in the slot next
to drive A. I have asked at a few Radio Shacks where would I put another
internal floppy drive and I got about the same answers as you did.

I believe the hard drive is a Western Digital. Let us know if you get any
solid answers.

I encountered the same problem with DR DOS when I loaded it onto my TL/2... bye
bye 5-1/4" drive. But between DRI and Tandy I learned this was originally a
Tandy kludge to get the drive to work in the first place. Couldn't blame Tandy
for a design effected
before DR DOS existed; couldn't blame DR DOS for not being able to figure out
the idiosyncrasies of every make and model pc on the block. I gave up the
5-1/4" drive because DR DOS made the TL/2 run a whole lot smoother. I'm now
running the 4850ep; I deep
-sixed MS-DOS 3 hours after plugging the machine in; again, DR DOS makes the
machine run smoother and for some programs, like the bundled Windows 3.0, DR
DOS' memory management runs rings around MS-DOS. Tandy is by far not the only
manufacturer to have com
e up with quirky configurations, and just about every program has some problem
running on some machine, somewhere.

about using it.

I then received a 2400 baud modem (the Zoom v.42bis), added a
hard drive, downloaded a different comm progrtam, and then decided to
run a BBS. If it wasn't for that telecom, I wouldn't have gotten where
I am today :)

I may just use Deskmate's Telecom once in a while, just for the heck of it.
Maybe I'll set up a Macro (using the Macros companion, of course), that
will allow me to do automatic Zmodem downloads using Telecom :)
Shouldn't bee too difficult!

Well, from here, download a term. program like Procomm or Qmodem.

To do so: Find the file you want. Then, when you're about to downlo

Next: Hit Alt-C to go to the command sectionm of telecom (after delphi says

Hit f5, I believe, and select Transfer...

Make sure it's setup for Xmodem or

little use here in Delphi .ZIPland.

If your Deskmate Telecom supports Xmodem and isn't d/ling, perhaps your
download settings on Delphi's Settings menu are incorrect or different from
what Telecom expects. You didn't say exactly what happens when you attempt

fill in the filename in the upper right, near the center check RECEIVE

input....just upgraded to VGA and trying to come up with a use for the CM-11.
If any one has run in to this..I would appreciate the info. Also is there
a communications program that will allow a Tandy to commucnicate with a MAC??
I tried Procomm and Telecom/Deskmate... Thanks, Andy

when he starts up the system he get what he calls a memory roll and no a
prompt or c prompt. When he pulls the card all waorks fine. I have had the same
card and drive in a HX, TL, TL/2, and TL/3. His ROM BIOS VER is 1.02.00 could
this be the problem? Or could it be a IRQ problem. If it is the latter of the
two can I get a new BIOS and where do I get it from? If its not any of these
things I have stated could someone give me some help..

Gee whiz Emperor... Telecom certainly does work. When I first got my TL/2 it
was the only comm program I had... or knew. I used it to sign on to many
bbs', Delphi, CIS (before I got their frontend)... I had a whole disk filled
with modem numbers and I was a happy camper! It did take a while to figure
out how to get a download going, but once I did it seemed like second
nature. No, Telecom isn't the best comm program, but neither is any other
bundled comm program, including the one in Windows and the one in GeoWorks.
They're not supposed to be... they're utility programs designed to do basic,
rudimentary modeming. And I think they do that job well.

  Neal,

I ordered the 4850 EP Multimedia version. It is supposed to come with the
Soundblaster Pro card inside. I ordered it with 1 Meg of video ram and a 240
Meg hard drive. I also bought the VGM 200 monitor. I have the VGM 440
monitor on my 2500 SX/20 now. I'll swap the monitors so I can get the higher
SVGA modes on the 4850.

I had to have it ordered and now I have to wait for it to come in. Did you
have to go through the same thing? The R.S. manager said that none of the
stores are stocking it yet. It's been 5 days since I placed the order so I
am expecting it any day now.

If you want more memory for DOS, I think you'll have to buy something like
QEMM. I've tried most of the memory managers (that I could find) in the
PC forum with 3 Packard Bell models (a 286 and 2 different 386SX's). No
luck with any of them. They either report that I don't have 640k (1 meg
was in the #$%^ machines) or seem to work, but don't. Some that I tried
were: MOV214, DOSMAX15, 704k, and UMM01. At first it seemed that DOSMAX
gave another 2k (big deal), but that was just the result of inserting
"STACKS=0,0" into CONFIG.SYS. Tried DOS 3.3 with everything and 4.01
with some of them.

As I understand it, to use extended or expanded memory a program must be
written to include their use. I really don't understand the popularity
of MS-DOG or the Intel microprocessors. To do more than 1 thing at a time
with DOS you have to cheat (I'm using MULTILINK) and the performance stinks.
When online with my CoCo, besides the terminal program I run 2 shells and
2 text editors at the same time, concurrently downloading, de-arcing it,
and looking at/playing with the download in another window. With just
a DOS shell and a terminal program running on this stinking 386SX, the
download slows the shell too much, leaving it practically unusable; and,
doing anything in the shell causes a bunch of errors in the download.

Excuse me, I think I'll go stick some pins into my Bill Gates doll.

This is what DOS uses to address above 640K. The extra 128K you put in is used
for video memory only. you might show 655K memory when you do a chkdsk this
would be some of the left over 128K video memory.. I have tried many other
memory programs and I get the same thing or about the same thing. Even the TX

I have the technical reference manual for the EX and except for about 3

IRQ5, they don't pin it out to the bus, so I brought it out my self.
I've have good luck building standard slots and connecting it to my EX.
I've even connected a passive backplane board to give me additional slots
in addition to the four I bulit internally. I was able to ad a 286 EXpress
card, an ATI vag wonder card, HD controller, internal modem, and a clock
card, and 2 serial port card. I move the internal floppy drive out to make
room for the four internal slots I built. Of course I also had to add ad-
ditional power supplies to power my 2 hard drives and additional cards. It
was quite a project but it worked! Good luck!

     1000 TX and other stuff
     From: FIRELINE To: ALL

Hi-

I've recently been having some bad problems with my TX, it's CM-5 monitor,
and the DeskMate 3.05 I recently got. They all are separate problems, however.
First of all, the TX. I need a few questions answered about it. 1) It says
in a Tandy Buyer's Catalog that a TX cannot support any High Density (1.2, 1.44)

drive. Is that true? 2) Exactly HOW do you hook the TX up to a color TV? I
already tried, because I have two computers, an SL and a TX, and only 1 monitor.

When I did, it came up all jumbled and junk. Are those A/V plugs input or
output? Now, to the monitor. This is the WORST problem of all that I have.
Every once in a while on the monitor, something goes wrong in it. The top part
of the screen seems fine, but upon closer examination I recognize that the
letters are stretched-longer than normal. And down by the bottom, the letters
are squeezed, smaller than usual. And in-between the letters get gradually
smaller and smaller. The ONLY way I have found to fix this, and I HATE doing
this (Although it relieves some stress) is to whack the monitor on its side
until the screen shifts back to normal, OR, to whack it while turning the
power on and off. That way is quicker. Finally, DeskMate. Why is it that the
Draw program on DeskMate 3.05 only recognizes 4 colors?!?! This is very
aggravating, because both of my other DeskMates, the one that came with the
SL built in, and Personal DeskMate 2, both allow 16 colors in the Draw and
Paint applications. Is there any way to make DM3.05 recognize 16 colors? If
not, is there any way to use the old Draw program from the SL in DM3.05?
I really want the Draw Application more than the Paint, and I want 16 colors!
Please help.

Patrick

Patrick,

The A/V jacks are output and should work if your TV/monitor has A/V inputs.

Does your Tandy monitor have a bank of screen adjustment knobs? My RGB-11
screen starts to jump and jitter sometimes and I've traced it to one of those
controls. Probably a bad solder joint. Maybe your problem is similar. I
used to (softly) whack mine too 'til I found that a paper match jammed in by
the bad adjuster works better <g>. Must open it up and fix it one day soon.

Can't offer any help on Deskmate's Draw. My Deskmate doesn't even have any
graphics programs. :-(

I'm sure if you look around you will probably find one on a shelf somewhere
in one of your local Rad Shacks. One thing for sure is that when you build
your expansion box and you use a ribbon cable to bring out the bus make
sure you make your cable as short as possible. I started out with a cable about
2 1/2 ft. and I got noise problems that occasionally would glitch my system.
Cutting it back to about 1 1/2 ft. in length cured the problem. I placed my
most sensitive cards on the inside of my EX (the VGA, HD controller, and
286 Express card) and the others ( clock card, modem card) on my external
passive backplane slots. I also cut a rectangle on the top of the case and
slipped in a 4" muffin fan to cool the internal cards. In that cramped
space it really needed it. The 286 Express card with it's math co-processor
produced a lot of heat. Also shield the cable you bring out of your system.
