I put in four 1 meg SIMM's and had five MB instantly. You sure you put the
things in the right sockets? If you only have two, they have to be in one
end of the socket rows, not the other.

You make a good point. I was just presenting the motherboard as an option,
not recommending it. I guess it all depends on how much you already have
invested in your system.
When I got the Tech Reference, I was never more confused. I don't have
an electronics background (would like to get into some "hardware hacking"
sometime, though). And Tandy seems to assume that anyone reading the
manual is already intimate with IBM PC architecture. All it says about
the interrupt controller is "Must meet Intel 8259A." Same with the timer
chip. Even some of the proprietary Tandy stuff is not well documented -
the EEPROM for instance.  Over time I've been filling in the gaps, though;
it's a little less confusing than it was. There is a lot of useful infor-
mation in it, if it does take a while to understand.
Lately, comp.sys.tandy has been about Tandy 8-bit machines. There are
various local BBS's for Tandy. There is a list of Tandy user groups on
PC-Link, I think. I used to have it, but it looks like I deleted it. Some
of them operate BBS's.
I see from reading old messages that you know about electronics. How
does an EEPROM work? Suppose someone ran SETUPTL /B and messed up the
EEPROM so that the computer wouldn't boot. Would they have to take the
machine in for service, or is there a way to fix it?

Hello, 6-3-94
Yes, I took a class in which we actually programmed an EPROM. There is
a special "box" you can buy, it's called an EPROM burner. Simply place the
erased chip in the correct socket on the "box". A cable connects the
"burner" to your computer, so you can write the machine language program
with your "assembler" and then store it in a file. The machine language
program is "downloaded to the "EPROM burner" which puts the "code" in the
proper memory locations and "burns" the bits in.
In school we used the Heathkit 6800 MPU trainer, it's a small computer
with a keypad, you've probably seen one. Well, we pulled the "Rom chip"
from the trainer and plugged it into the "Rom burner box", then we actually
uploaded the existing program from this pre-programmed Rom. Once we had the
"Heathkit rom program" in the (pc) computer, we were able to modify it and
finally download it to a new EPROM.
I don't think you can mess up the eprom, during "setup tl". I had
my other computer break down once, the monitor would not display any
alphanumeric characters. It turned out that a "counter chip" was burned
out, pretty simple problem to fix. I be curious to know if anyone else
has had any chips burn out in their Tandy computers.
As far as the 1000tl service manual is concerned, reading about the
80286 MPU would be a good place to start. I have some notes from a graduate
level class (Machine Lang. Prog.), so feel free to ask any questions.
                                       bye, Paul Serapions

Any modem will work. Just make sure it is "Hayes compatible" (most are)
and you really should get a 2400 bps modem. They are available brand new for
around $60 or so, and it just doesn't make sense to get a slower one. I have
a ZOOM brand external modem (it sits outside the computer) that has been
very reliable. I recommend it highly.

If you can't afford $60, it is possible to find a used modem at computer
shows and hamfests for less than $20. I have a 300 bps modem I will give
you for price of shipping ( around $5), but it is so slow you will wish you
had a 2400 bps one.

I just remembered something I tried when I was playing with the cards. I don't
remember which program I used but I was able to use part of my VGA memory as the

page frame for EMS. Of course I didn't have enough VGA mem to do graphics but
it did work. I remember I tried this without the EMS board installed. I guess
if you could allocate enough upper mem space to your graphics mem and you had
enough graphics mem in first place you could probably have your page frame come
from VGA mem and still have graphics capability. Just more interesting stuff.

Your system will run win 3.1 in standard mode if you add more memory. Add more
to the system board. OOOOPs Is this a "true" 286? Can you add EXTENDED memory?
EXPANDED memory won't do. Easiest way to tell is does your expansion card
sockets
have one or two connectors in-line with each other. If two then you can add
extended memory by getting an add-in card. System will be slow though. Above
Boards are still available last time I was in the store. These are good cards
for memory expansion. The 386 InBoard may not be available but I've seen ads
for 386/486 cpu replacements(ie They plug directly into the same socket where
the 286 is/was). Good Luck. Haven't read your replies so probably someone
said this already.

It is some interesting stuff you have there. :-) Yes, I have heard of some
programs that will use extra VGA memory as EMS - I assume that's what you're
talking about. This is another way of emulating EMS.

As for limems41.zip, the page frame for the Micro Mainframe EMS card is fixed
by hardware (there isn't even a jumper).

If you're thinking of using the extra 128k of video RAM on the 1000TL- and
RL-series as extra EMS pages, it could probably be done, but my investigation
in that area has stopped for the time being until I get VGA. I did write a
program that should in principle allow a TL or RL user with VGA, and CGA and
VGA monitors, to run a program requiring Tandy video. I tested the Tandy
parts on my TL and the VGA parts on an IBM PS/2, and that's where it stands.

I thought the data compression and error correction protocol (v.42, MNP)
were a function of the modem, independent of whatever term package you use.
Of course, your modem won't use these features unless the remote is using
them too.

Page 21 of the Intel owner's guide to 14.4 modem:

"When your modem dials a remote modem, it automatically negotiates to set up
the error control protocol that both modems support. It tries to establish a
connection in this order:
 1. LAPM (v.42)
 2. MNP
 3. Connection without error control"

I don't completely understand it, but somehow of another, the error control
and data compression and assisted by the software. I think the software does
some, but not much. The MNP is obviously only done by the software, and I
think the V.42 is done with the hardware working with the software. I'm going
to take the modem back, and exchange it for another one from Midwest Micro,
that is the same price and has the stuff in hardware. As one person told me,
