I have two 3000HD's. For some odd reason TANDY put C&T NEAT CHIP SETS in them
but did not put C&T NEAT CHIP SET BIOS's in them. I upgraded both machines a
couple of years ago, one with a PHOENIX C&T NEAT CHIP SET BIOS and the other
with an
AMERICAN MEGATRENDS C&T NEAT CHIP SET BIOS. I now have access to the 384K of
UMB's and can define TYPE 47 HARD DRIVES.

Companies selling BIOS chips can be found in Computer Shopper. Make sure they
are PHOENIX or AMERICAN MEGATRENDS C&T and make sure they are TANDY COMPATIBLE.
Both of mine work great. I prefer the AMERICAN MEGATRENDS a bit more because
all
you have to do to configure your machine is hit DEL on bootup. The PHOENIX is
a little less user friendly. Hope they are still available. Good luck!

hi. Don't know if any of you can help, but it's worth a shot :). I've had
the old sensation for almost 2 years now; just put in a new intel 14.4 modem
(into one of the expansion slots). Everything's fine, EXCEPT, the answering
machine that comes with the sensation is not doing it's job. On the
receiving end, it plays its message, but it won't beep anymore & TAKE the
message. On the callers end, it answers the phone, but then....nothing. No
message, etc. On the old modem in the S!, we disconnected the white
thingy-ma-jig :), put the new modem in & selected the same com port & irq
the old one was set to. I'm able to access Prodigy & obviously here, but I
NEED my answering machine! Any ideas? No doubt it's very simple, but please,
enlighten me, if you can. Thanks :) ---------

Is the CAD pgm a DOS pgm? If so you may need the PIF file. Start your PIF
editor and for each option you can click on help and get specific help for
that option. Yes you will need to actually 'run"
the PIF file which in turn will start the CAD pgm with the various options used
from the PIF file for that particular session. If your CAD pgm is a DOS pgm
you may not be able to run it because of windows taking up too much of your
lower 640K. Maybe you could get rid of some TSR's or load them into high
memory using loadhigh/devicehigh commands. See your DOS book for that.

for 1.44mb drives N=7. I don't know if your controller supports 1.44mb drives
though. If your controller is built into the motherboard and your setup pgm
doesn't show a 1.44mb option then you don't have it. If your controller is a
card then maybe you can use 1.44mb but you would need to use drivparm as
mentioned in previous email

conflicting. Does the answer function work when the new modem is not installed.
Did you recheck your settings on both things. I don't know the sensation very
well. Is there a setup pgm which includes the ans. mach. Ahhh one thought just
came to mind. Depending on what kind of Intel 14.4 you got it may be setup to
auto answer. Check out the default modem config. for the Intel. Maybe both
the modem and ans. Mach are trying to answer the phone at the same time and are
messing each other up. Good luck.

I just recently upgraded my monitor from a CM-5 to a CM-11 and am hoping to
use the CM-5 on my other computer, and I am planning to get this card to
use too. OK, here goes with the info: The company is PC Enterprises and
the address is 2400 Belmar Blvd. Bldg B-16 PO Box 292, Belmar, New Jersey
07719. Don't expect to get a catalog in a hurry, it took me a while to get
the one I have, but you might get one faster than me, I dunno. The phone #
to place an order (and info too probably) is 1-800-922-7257. Ok, there are
two different cards. One is $49.95 and basically uses EGA programs and rusn
that sort of stuff on your standard CGA, EGA, or monochrome RGB monitor.
Resolution is 320x200x16 and 640x200x16. The only drawback I can see is that
it will not run 350 line EGA graphics, and I don't know if that is a problem
or not. One thing you may want to do is check with Tandy before buying this
card to make sure you can disable the video controller currently in your
computer. OK, the other card is basically identical but it also has a 15 pin
VGA connector for a VGA monitor if you decide to get one later, and it is
$109.95. But I think you could go on and buy a new VGA card, and get better
resolution/colors than with that card. Hope this has helped!

Hi, Jim!

I have a 1000TL and I upgraded to VGA about 2-1/2 years ago. You can use
any VGA card that fits in 8-bit slots, which is what the TL has. If the
computer doesn't want to recognize the card, there is a very neat little
program you can type in GW-BASIC, run it, and it creates a file called
VGAFIX.COM. Place it in your DOS directory and add it to your AUTOEXEC.BAT
file - problem solved. It was written by Greg Law of PCM magazine, and you
can get it for the price of a back issue. If you need it, we can fill you in
on the issue to order. Now, if you are planning to order the monitor and
card from DCS, they call themselves experts on Tandy computers, and they
will tell you for sure before you order if the combo you want will work in
the 1000TL. So, one way or the other, you'll be set. VGA, by the way, will
speed up your system by freeing your lower 640k of the need to process video
- that will be processed on the video card. Don't expect more than the TL
was capable of when it was made (1988/9), though. That means you are limited
to standard VGA, no super VGA. If you get a .28 dot pitch monitor, you will
be quite pleased with standard VGA for a long time to come, however.

If the mouse is not a COM port mouse, you may be able to set up one modem

less than $100 for a controller card...just make sure the controller card

Hi, Jim!

The card depends on your eventual goal. If you think you will ever get a
newer computer and might want to move the new monitor to it, you should get
a card capable of SVGA (512K) now. If that is not a probability, then you
could do with a standard VGA (256K).

The monitor should still be .28 dot pitch. That means smaller "dots" and
a lot more of them, which is much more pleasant to look at regardless of the
colors and resolution. Monitors with a larger dot pitch number look grainy
by comparison.

I'm really glad I got a good monitor. Even if I ever get a new computer,
I like this old TL so well, it gets to stay around, too!

Why is the TL limited to standard VGA? My impression is that any (S)VGA

Old Tandy forum messages bear you out with respect to dot pitch; .28 is
definitely worth the extra cost.

Re: SVGA on 1000TL & new computers with 16-bit slots.

I was told that even though a card may have 512k or 1 meg, you will only
get the equivalent of 256k in the 8-bit slots of the 1000-series computers.
If that's wrong, well, OK. Anyway, I am certainly pleased with the way mine
turned out!

The card will be a 16-bit SVGA card, but part of it overhangs the slot in
an 8-bit system such as the 1000TL. That is why you will only get the use of
256k of memory and standard VGA. However, if you later move it to a computer
with 16-bit slots, you will get full SVGA.

Thanks, Jeff. Can't remember who it was. The Technical Reference manual
has a lot of tech info; I was just wondering if there was anything for Tandy
with flowcharts for solving technical problems like IBM has. I've never
had any problems, but just to be on the safe side ...

Sue, always a pleasure to hear from you. You know more about the 1000TL
than anyone else here, so if you say there's no service manual, I guess
there isn't one. :-(

Wesley, you can get a tech reference for the SL from Tandy National Parts.
Your local Radio Shack should also be able to get you one, but at some RS's
they don't know which end is up .... Anyway, right now a guy on Usenet is
offering one for $20+shipping, which is much less than Tandy would charge.

A .bin file is not necessarily anything special, not necessarily even a
program. The .bin extension has no special meaning for MS-DOS; it just
means a binary file of some kind. For example, I have an expanded memory
manager in the databases here which is a .bin file. You could rename it
.sys and it would work just the same. My assembler happens to make .bin
files rather than .sys, and DOS doesn't care, as I said.

New Tandy's are 100% compatible, but old Tandy's may not be, which is why
we have this forum. If you buy a Tandy, whether it is new or old, you will
find that Tandy owners are a close-knit group, willing to help each other,
and that Tandy's are among the most reliable computers made.

Wesley,

I would definately pay extra for the N-I monitor. I tried an Interlaced monitor
(Syncmaster 3) and the flicker drove me nuts. The computer company that sold Windows is that it is an
eye pleaser, and can make my printer do fancy tricks, but it is not as
impressive for real work as DOS-based programs, or DeskMate-interfaced
programs either, for that matter. So, you might guess, I installed DeskMate

Hi, Jeff!

Gotcha! <VBG> I *do* have DeskMate and Windows, both on the same computer
(the 3800HD, not the 1000TL). There is a method to running them both - you
can run Windows from DeskMate, not DeskMate from Windows. Tandy Support says
in a very deadpan voice, "We don't support it!" Nevertheless, it works.

Yes, I've seen a little of WinMate on the Sensation that a friend of mine
bought, and moused around through some of the menus, but didn't get to
actually use it. I think Tandy is using it a replacement for DeskMate on the
newer computers on which they are loading Windows - at least it appears to
have the purpose of being the easy-to-learn-to-use-computers software that
was so nice for beginners with DeskMate.

I have heard of the SDK for DeskMate, but never known anyone who bought
it, and never seen it offered for sale. Where did you find it, if you don't
mind my asking (I'm not a developer, of course, just fascinated with things
DeskMate). Being a longtime user of DeskMate and having several programs
from other publishers that are DM-interfaced, I, too, have come to realize
just how clever the design of the program is. It has power that many people
are unaware of.

Hi, Wesley!

Re: DeskMate "runtime" files

I'm going to try to clarify this for you - and probably make it murkier
in the process! Please be patient and try to follow along :-)

On your computer you have the DeskMate "kernel" in ROM, enabling you to
boot the computer without having either a boot floppy in the disk drive, or
a hard drive. The rest of the DeskMate "applications" were found on floppy
diskettes.

Eventually you probably added a hard drive to your system, and loaded the
DeskMate applications onto it. Then you used the Setup program to tell the
computer either to boot from ROM or to boot from Drive C - but if from Drive
C, the AUTOEXEC.BAT file contained a reference to DESK.COM in ROM (the
"d:desk" line).

Included in DeskMate were some basic applications, such as Text, Filer,
and Worksheet. Also there were some required files to make the whole thing
work, such as video and printer files, and a few others. These required
files are the "runtime" files.

When other software publishers designed versions of their programs to run
under DeskMate (DeskMate Quicken, DeskMate Q & A Write, Lotus Spreadsheet
for DeskMate, etc.), they set them up to look for these required files when
you loaded them into memory. However, some people buying the programs didn't
have DeskMate on their computers (mostly folks with brands other than
Tandy), so they didn't have the required files. For them, a "runtime disk"
was included in the software package. This, however, did not provide them
with the familiar DeskMate Desktop, or the other versatile features of
DeskMate outside of the package they were buying.

When Tandy started selling 1000-series computers with a hard drive
already installed, they no longer needed to have DeskMate in ROM for new
users to be able to "plug and play" right out of the box. About that time,
they started selling DeskMate 3 as a "stand-alone" program. In other words,
you could run DeskMate as you know it on any IBM-compatible computer without
the "kernel" of the program in ROM. But then along came a phenomenon in
software: Windows 3.0. It was highly advertised before coming onto the
market, and was an instant best-seller on the first day of sale. Any plans
Tandy might have had to continue to develop and improve DeskMate just fell
apart then, I think. They continued to advertise and market DeskMate 3 until
all the stock was sold, and then dropped the program.

It is this stand-alone program that you want, I think, and the only way
you are going to get it is to be lucky enough to find an unsold copy
collecting dust on a backroom shelf in a R.S. store somewhere. (This is not
unheard of - find a friendly longtime R.S. employee who has ferreting
talent.) I got my copy as a safety measure when I sensed that this was about
to happen.

   Good luck in your hunt!

Yes, often things that Tandy "doesn't support" will work just fine ....

A while back, some of us had a discussion in comp.sys.tandy about writing
programs for DeskMate. About a month ago, I received an offer by email to
sell me a copy of the SDK for $55, and I jumped at it (Tandy sells the SDK
for $299). There is a lot to study in it, but it appears to be a relatively
easy way to give programs a nice graphical interface - even under DOS, if
you get the runtime version (I asked; we'll see what Tandy says).

I haven't run deskmate for a while until I read this message, so I reloaded it

special for me anymore.

However, I again made a PIF file called desk.pif, put it in the deskmate direc-

deskmate in the C:\DESKMATE directory, open the PIF editor and for the program
filename put in C:\DESKMATE\DESK.EXE
Window Title: Deskmate
Startup Directory C:\deskmate

Video Memory: Low Graphics
Memory Requirements: KB Required 640 KB Desired 640

Display Usage: Full Screen

Don't worry about advanced settings and save the pif file.

When you D click on the Deskmate icon, you will be calling the Desk.Pif file and

not the Desk.exe file. The Pif file will start the program for you.

Make sure you have a mouse driver loaded in DOS and set Deskmate's mouse setup
to OTHER.

Yes this works for me right now.

Have fun!

Hi, Jim!

Yes, you do need that particular file. The earlier versions of DeskMate 3
didn't include a VGA driver - hardly anybody had VGA then. If you ever
bought any of the DeskMate-interfaced programs from other publishers,
though, you might already have the file under another name in one of those
packages. Usually, it will be called DMVSVGA.RRS in those packages. Some
people report that renaming the file to the .RES extension works. You might
also find that you need a little program that appeared in PCM magazine,
called VGAFIX.COM (compiled from a short GW-BASIC program that you type in
yourself) in order to assure compatibility with some software. I needed it
for DLite.

I hadn't heard oODEL I or III CMD
files. I've been looking but have located next to nothing. Your feedback
would be greatly appreciated as I and a friend are preparing a new
emulator (much better than the canadian version already out) but wish to
include some software with it (ready to run that is). Thx!

I don't know about the SHARP but their is an NEC compatible out their. I
use to own one. The memory upgrade was exactly the same.

I seem to be having a problem finding my setup, configuration thingy.
I have tried the SETUP46 program on the system floppy, and harddrive,
and keep getting a message stating that "this setup is not for this
computer". Is there another way to get to the setup area, as I would
like to add more RAM to my CPU. I have a Tandy 2500 SX 33 system.

 Best Regards!

PS. Access to Delphi sucks buttermilk lately.
