Wes,
The CM-11 was the next version of the CM-10. Both monitors were capable of
CGA graphics at 640 x 200 not the 640 x 400 you mentioned in one of your
July e-mails. They are not capable of EGA graphics either.

Howard,
I did it on my T1000SX with no problems. ALL you have to do is CAREFULLY
pull out your 8088 processor and put in the V20. Use a small flatblade
screwdriver to pry the 8088 out of the socket. Do a little at a time at
each end of the chip. When you put the V20 in make sure it is oriented
right. Usually there is a notch at one end of the chip. There should also
be a notch in the socket. Make sure there is no static electricity around.
Good luck. When I upgraded I did see a small speed increase.

It's true the "BIOS" may not support a larger/different harddrive but all
you need to do is get some third party hard drive format/management software
like OnTrack's Disk Manager. It will format and if necessary install a special
device driver in your config.sys to allow the hard drive to work with the
computer. You could also get a new bios for the computer. There are a couple
of places that advertise regularly in the back pages of the popular computer
magazines.

yes, slower computers and even fast computers, if they're doing a lot of
multitasking, can lose characters because they can't service the comport
fast enough so the comport just erases the old data to make room for the
new data. The comport just keeps doing this until the computer is able to
take the data. Of course by that time it's to late. 19200 is about the quickest
you can go with an XT or slow 286.

You can run Windows 3.0(not 3.1) in REAL mode but doesn't allow you to use
anyting except what comes with it and its pretty slow
You can also run a program similar to Windows called GEOWORKS ENSEMBLE. It will
also run somewhat slow but comes with a good set of applications. Unfortunately
no third party vendors seem to be programming for it. If you get a VGA system
that will make seeing things a lot clearer and allow more programs to run.
Oh yeah, if you are a member of America Online and use the DOS(not Windows)
version of their software you are using an older version of the GEOWORKS
core system. That was AOL's first IBM PC compatable software for their system.
They started with Mac's and now have a DOS and Windows version.

WFW 3.11 is an "upgraded" Windows 3.1. Its big thing is networking built in
to the software. But is also has a new way to access compatible hard disks
which is much faster than Win 3.1. Those are the two biggies as far as I know.
I'm sure there are lots of little things. In fact some of the program code is
the same as Microsoft's upcoming "Chicago" program. Most mail order companies
are shipping WFW 3.11 now. Even Microsoft is now recommending it over WIN 3.1.

As the 3000HD is a true AT compatible, it will run Windows 3.1 in standard
mode. Windows will be cranky with only 2MB extended, and will be slow on
an 8 MHz 286. The 3000HD originally came with Xenix System V, a version of
Unix (maybe that was an option?). Xenix can multitask.

All of the above is just stuff I picked up off the 'net; I have no personal
experience of the 3000HD.

Those are types of escape code sequences which is usually found on some of
the internet connections. What you need to do is set your terminal software
to emulate VT100 and this will filter out all those numbers in brackets.

I can't recall off hand exactly but I've heard that if you disable a certain
pin on the Tandy printer cable that you can use non-Tandy printer with a
Tandy. One other thought is that Tandy does carry a variety of printer
cables and they may already have a cable that will allow you to connect the
1000 to a non-Tandy printer but it may run you about $20-$30.

I've never tried using a null modem cable so I can't say exactly what the

I don't want to buy a cable for $30. (Actually, the former owner of

I want to build the cable. Also, the Brother HR-1 doesn't work

Tandy 1000 Card Edge Connector Printer Port Pinout
--------------------------------------------------

[Reprinted from Delphi forum message #20063, Dec. 19, 1991, by SANDLINJ.]

Ok, I looked up the pinout for the Tandy 1000 SX printer port -
hopefully it is the same as that on the HX. This is for a 34 pin
CARD EDGE connector cable (to centronix, but that is irrelevant).

The diagram I got this from did not show how the pins are
numbered physically.

pin Designation pin Designation
--- ----------- --- -----------
 1 PPSTROB* 2 Ground
 3 PPDATA0 4 Ground
 5 PPDATA1 6 Ground
 7 PPDATA2 8 Ground
 9 PPDATA3 10 Ground
11 PPDATA4 12 Ground
13 PPDATA5 14 NC
15 PPDATA6 16 Ground
17 PPDATA7 18 Ground
19 PPACK* 20 Ground
21 PPBUSY 22 Ground
23 PPPAEM 24 Ground
25 PSEL* 26 NC
27 PPAUTOF* 28 PPFAULT
29 NC 30 PPINIT*
31 Ground 32 NC
33 Ground 34 +5V

That is how the data is listed in the Technical Reference for the Tandy
1000 SX.

I couldn't find a note to explain the (*) on some of the pins. I think it
might mean the signal is inverted (using a NOT gate), but I'm not positive.

I'm also not sure but I think the numbering works like this: The odd
numbers are on the bottom, the even on the top of the card edge. They
should count from left to right going from lowest to highest. You should
be able to verify this with a voltmeter, since the 5V pin and the Grounds
are listed above.

[I hope you find this useful. - tvdog]

you can look in the index under "hard cards". Most any hard card should work
seeing as how the 3000hd has 16 bit slots, but I have heard something about
different drive types. I think my 37 meg is like a type 11 or something...If
someone could tell me more about this drive type stuff I'd appreciate it...I
think most newer drives require drive type 47, which is not supported with the
CMOS setup program I have...if anyone can tell me anything about this drive
type please let me know. Also, does anyone know where I could find an update

the setup won't allow for it, but it should be possible, once again, info is

The drive "type" is actually an index into a table in the BIOS ROM. The
BIOS uses the entry in the table to determine the drive's geometry (how
many tracks, sectors per track, etc.) and other info (e.g., write pre-
compensation cylinder). The table entries are specific for particular drives,
though, and all the predefined drives are pretty small by today's standards.

To solve this problem, some BIOSes set aside type 47 as a "user-defined"
type. For that type, you enter the table data yourself, rather than the
BIOS looking it up. Not all BIOSes have that feature. In fact, the tables
for different BIOSes are different, so the same drive will have a different
"type" on different systems.

I've been trying to get some help from my local Radio Shack here in the
Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania area and they have given me nothing but trouble
several times. This latest mishap occurred when I ordered a record needle
and they called and said it was in. I went to the store, and was told it
wasn't there. They did it again, and again it wasn't there.

I've had problems trying to get any sort of help with my computer there

anyone have their headquarters phone # in Fort Worth, Texas? Any #'s or

both my local Radio Shack and the people in Texas regarding a memory
problem in my 2500/sx. But, in the long run, we solved the problem. The
tech support people in Texas are very helpful, but make sure you are
talking to someone who is trained in the area you are having problems. If
they seem hesitant, or need to check the database at every question,
ask if there is someone more knowlegeable in the particular field. They
were very accomodating with me.
The tech support # is 817-878-6875. Press 1, then 1 again and
wait for a technician.
Good luck with the ordering problem. Chain stores are notorious
for delays. The main Radio Schack #, I think, is 817-390-3011.

Good Luck

ok, that's a pretty easy question...I took a class at my high school and we
programmed with it. You should be able to still use line numbers and it will
work more or less like standard BASIC. If you want to do without line numbers
for subroutines they start out like this...er rather here's an example

GOSUB EXAMPLE
:EXAMPLE
PRINT"THIS IS AN EXAMPLE"
RETURN

To mark the subroutine you use a colon, and then gosub to tell it to gosub to
the example subroutine...if you study the included programs for QBASIC it may
help you to learn some stuff that way too...

Hi Paul -

If I remember correctly, there are two ways to do this. You can do it the
old fashion way by stating

gosub part1
 .
 .
 .
part1:
 .
 .
subroutine here
 .
return

which is similar to the way GWBASIC would have done it. Or you can declare a
subroutine and pass parameters and such and the subroutine is seperate from
the main body of the program. In the main body, you would have

DECLARE SUB PART1

and then seperate from the main program you would construct your subroutine
as you normally would. I forget the exact syntax for passing parameters but
the HELP screen is sufficient in explaining how to use it.

If you want a new setup program, you should probably get it from Radio
Shack (rather than from me) to make sure it's the right one.

DRIVPARM and DRIVER.SYS go in the Config.sys file. They are used to change
the geometry of a disk drive and are useful if your DOS version doesn't
recogne number of sectors per track.
/T:n n is the number of tracks.

A 1.44M diskette has 2 heads, 80 tracks, and 18 sectors per track.
DRIVER.SYS gives you a new drive letter for the same drive, but the
geometry for the two logical drives is different. Put this in Config.sys:

DEVICE=DRIVER.SYS /D:n [/C] [/F:n] [/H:n] [/N] [/S:n] [/T:n]

The syntax is basically the same as for DRIVPARM. I'm not sure what /F
should be for 1.44M; try different n's and see if one works.

For the SETUP program...if you have a copy that will work for the 3000hd, I
would really appreciate a copy of it (a newer version that is), because I can
almost assure you that the local radio shack won't be able to get it for me...

I'll have to check out the DRIVPARM and stuff...the controller for the 3000hd
supports 1.44 drives, correct? I don't currently have one to test it with, but
I would like to know if it is able to support it...

Thanks!

I got your setup program and am mailing it to you. Use it at your own risk
(i.e., be ready to pull the battery on your CMOS and start from scratch if
it doesn't work).

Meanwhile, I checked some dates. The 3000HD came out in July of 1986; it
is fully compatible with the IBM AT. An IBM with ROM BIOS dated 11/15/85
or later can support 1.44M drives, although no IBM system had one until
1987. One needs to get a new generic AT setup program from IBM to add a
1.44M drive to a pre-PS/2 IBM system, since the setup that came with the AT
didn't provide 1.44M as an option.

This setup program I'm sending you is dated 12/11/87, and is generic for
the Tandy 3000- and 4000-series, so maybe it is Tandy's equivalent of IBM's
improved generic AT setup. The BBS where I got it has a pretty complete
set of Tandy setup programs, and there wasn't a specific one for the
3000HD.

      Software...................................817-878-6890

Something you ought to find out is whether the store you are dealing with
is a franchise or a company-owned store. In general, I have had poor results
with franchises, and good results with company-owned stores. Also, be sure
to go there when the manager is on duty, so that you can talk to him (her).
These stores tend to hire a lot of youngsters who are untrained,
inexperienced, and temporary. Tandy gives good support even for its older
computers, but it doesn't work very well when the store person is too young
to even remember the existence of the particular model you are talking about!

I hope you can get this solved.

Hi Bry -

Chances are, if the model of Tandy PC doesn't prompt for setup during bootup
then there is is no setup program. I can't speak for all Tandys but on some
of the earlier 1000 series Tandys, the PC will recognize disk drives as they
are installed into the PC. I can't think of why it wouldn't detect the floppy
unless it was a high density drive, in which case some of the earlier Tandys
wouldn't support it (only up to double density).
