**********SWOTN cont'd***********
I hope *P puts these up in order. If not, look for PART ONE
elsewhere <g>.
The German campaign game allows R&D of the 3 jet nachtjagers
The campaigns and TODs are unrealistic in only one way: the
computer sets them up just like SWOTL, where bombers always
have escorts when playing against the Allies. That was not
the case at night until mid-1944. Also, when playing against
the Germans, the computer send groups of 3-4 nachtjagers at
you at a time (ala SWOTL); at night, night fighters operated
alone.
Anyway, hex-lethality is quite high everywhere in this game.
Everyone's got 20mm and 30mm cannon, so just having a big
gun isn't enough. Missions are set up (on the German side)
to REALISTICALLY depict actual engagements. That means you
will almost always face more bombers than you can probably
shoot down. Remember that the Germans realized early on
that they could seldom completely STOP an attack, only
cause enough attrition among RAF crews that the offensive
would cease (such as in March '44, for example). That's
another thing that makes killing bombers harder: How many
CAN you whittle away before a stray shot zaps one of your
engines. A close look at the night-fighting record shows
that Germans generally returned to base only when out of
ammo or damaged. How far will you go to get that last kill?
<g>. A lot of you out there hate B17s. I think you'll like
the Lanc. It's faster and more maneuverable than the B17,
and its easier to fight with, since you only have 3 gun
positions to mind. A disadvantage? Well, I think it balances
out because nachtjagers are slower and easier to shoot up
than the single-engined SWOTL planes. IF you see them FIRST
<g>.
So get ready to skip a Wallis Drum Bomb into the Mohne
Dam, or watch Hamburg burn, or watch your fellow Lancs fall
down blazing over Berlin, or evade that persistent Mosquito
on your tail, or fire schrage musik up into the belly of a
Halifax, or precision-bomb Peenemunde in the moonlight.
Whatever you wanted simulate, SWOTN either has it, or gives
you the power to create it. Please post me as you mail your
disks. I'll get them back 2U ASAP. Tom Dungan NNPJ65A
