Subject: Bank Switching and the Drum Channel

Does anyone know how bank switching will work with drum patches from
different banks? If I want to augment the standard set with 2-3 drums
from another bank, for example, could I create a separate track (or tracks)
for the additional drums and put a bank switch command in that track only,
associating that track, and the original track, both with channel 10.
Is there any other technique to associate a bank switch with a note, rather
than a channel?

Gravis - any comments?

Does anybody have better brass samples than the ones the current patches
have? I'd especially like to see a better brass hit.

Subject: CSound for the PC

Message written at Fri Nov 5 20:33:29 GMT 1993

As Arnim asked, I suppose this is my cue to place this message on the
news group.

There is a port of Csound to MS-DOS available by anonymous ftp and by
e-mail. There may well be more than one of course, but as I did the
port of this one I know about it.

You can get Csound for a PC, whether 286, 286+fpt, 386, 386+fpt or 486
from ftp.bath.ac.uk:pub/jpff by anonymous ftp. The stuff is in zip
format there, and there are examples, documentation (a little) and
sources.

If you find anonymous ftp is not available you can send
e-mail to info-server@maths.bath.ac.uk containing a body like
		request: dream
		Topic: index
		request: end

Items are sent as uuencoded 'zip' files, possibly split across
multiple mail messages if they are large. You will need to:
1) put any multi part messages back together into a single file.
2) run a uudecode program on this file (uudecode is pretty standard
on unix machines & PC implementations are available at most good
archive sites)
3) run something like 'unzip' or 'pkunzip' to unpack the zip archive.

You can get them by mail saying
		request: dream
		Topic: xxxx
		request: end

where xxxx is one of the files mentioned in the index.

In order to save you time, and to indicate what is available by either
method I attach the index info below.

If that fails, mail me.

You may like to note that I have just set up a mailing list called
PCsound@maths.bath.ac.uk for discussing this software and related
issues, bugs, fixes and new releases etc etc..... This is not a
replacement for the Exeter-based one (and actually predates it!) but
is for bug reporting in this port, announcements of new releases and
bug fixes etc.

This has been ported from the latest MIT sources I could get, and
there has been a little customisation, for graphics in particular, and
also for producing .wav format files. On the 386 and 486 it uses
virtual memory. The copyright remains with MIT who created this
wonderful software.

If this is of interest to you, enjoy it. If not ignore it!

Subject: Recording Session

I have just started toying around with Recording Session (just got
it), and find that I cannot play my keyboard (Roland) and hear the
notes at the same time. Only after the music played on the keyboard
has been saved and played using the PLAY icon do I hear it. This
does not seem right; what am I doing wrong?

Subject: track or treat...

Morning all

I have read the comments pertaining to program changes embedded in track
10...makes sense. I do have a question though - and I don't feel guilty as
I don't think there is a FAQ yet :). At present I have a Roland SCC1 card
and there are 5 different drum sets which I use - sometimes switching
between HUGE and tiny percussion in a single piece - how would I get around
this using a GUS with Cakewalk? - is it possible to have multiple tracks
assigned to track 10, each with different starting and ending points? or
what?

I don't have my GUS MAX or Cakewalk 2.0 at the moment - waiting for
delivery etc...

Thanx in advanx - Richard

Morning all

I think we need to get a FAQ in place as soon as possible. I would hate to
see the efforts put in place to filter out the 'how-do-I-get-the-GUS-to-work-
with-the-latest-aardvark' questions from the gamesters, be undermined by a
rash of more musically focussed pleas for help along the lines of
I'm-running-out-of-my-1-meg-memory-when-I-include-program-changes-on-
channel-10'

what do you think?

which was zipped using pkzip v2.0.

Have fun with it.
