Is there any way to load MIDI patches into GUS's RAM for use by a
DOS-based sequencer (such as Voyetra's Sequencer Plus Gold)? (I
apologize of this I missed this in previous digests, I've fallen behind

Subject: Downloading Files, etc.

This question is only peripherally GUS-related, in that the files
I'm after are for the GUS. I'm rather new at this Internetting
business, and am restricted a bit by the manner of access (i.e.,
my local Freenet in Ottawa). The restriction is that they don't
allow FTP-ing or Telnetting (only e-mail). Now, I can get GUS
files from Gravis in B.C., but even after 11:00pm it still costs
me $.21/minute at 2400 baud; while my financial woes probably
won't cause anyone out there to lose sleep, "I have always relied
on the kindness of strangers".

So, to make a long story short (too late?), I am tapping the
collective wisdom of the GUS group to find out if there is any
alternative for me out there if I want to get the latest patches,
demos, and all the other wonderful goodies I read about daily in
this most august of journals. I understand (though only
vaguely) that there is some way to convert binary files to text,
then get them in the mail, but again I think I need the
assistance of a samaritan or two.

I await your replies with bated breath (that's "bated", not
"baited" - I spat out the worms).

Subject: Grading software companies

Sorry, I can't quote yesterday's newsletter, but this is concerning the person
who was giving all the companies different grades based on their support.

I think your list is great, but it does't apply to everyone. We all know how
picky SBOS & the GUS can be when trying to get them to work with a game, so
when you raunch on Apogee for their lack of support despite what they said,
I'll have to disagree with you. I have a 256k GUS and the software that came
with the 2.06 version of the disks. I have had no problems getting the GUS to
output music/sound fx with any of their games, including Halloween Harry. I
didn't even have to fiddle around with them or anything.

P.S. - The same applies to the SF2 game that everybody is trying to get to
work. I get music & sound, no problem whatsoever.

No patch for GUS support, but to get the game to work with SBOS, your
GUS must be on port 220h, and you should start the game by running
main.exe with the /iirq<SB IRQ> switch. There's a bug in the game that
keeps it from parsing the /iio<address> switch properly, so even the real
SB has to resided on address 220h for it to be used.

First of all, you'll absolutely need the new disks for Ultramid to work
anyway since it requires the patches on those disks. There are over 100
more patches on the new disks than on the 1.2x disks, so you're missing
quite a lot. Without the new patches, you have no hope of getting Ultramid
working properly unless you create your own ultramid.ini. So download those
disks and we'll deal with this "ultrasound card not found" problem later.
Chances are the installation of the new disks will cure the problem by
setting up the appropriate environment strings.

I found something very interesting on the GUS DRAM...in the manual, it
says to use 100ns 256k x 4 (44256) dram chips, yet my GUS came with 70ns
dram when I purchased it. Luckily, when I upgraded to 1 meg, the dealer
only had 70ns drams on stock...I was requesting 100ns...I just found out
that my GUS had originally 70ns chips when I installed the chips I purchased.

I've bought a GUS recently and am pleased by the sound quality--worlds
better than my old SB Pro FM music. On installation, I got
'DRAM failure' in the diagnostic program. Is this a true problem,
or some sort of software glitch?

I returned the card, but got a second. It has the same symptoms.
Is this normal? All music/sound sounds fine except for the Terminator
Rampage demo, which goes totally garbled and static-filled after the
intro music.

Straight from the FAQ:
 --------------------------------------------------------------------------
25] What are the pinouts for the CD Audio IN on the GUS?

Written by: <grtorlba@seattleu.edu>

About two days ago I posted requested some info on the 4-pin
CD audio pin on the GUS. I never got a reply but I got the info by
downloading volume 1 of the digest.

	The pin info was:

	left ground ground right

I've tried this pin assignment and it seems to work. The
articles in the digest pointed out that they weren't certain of the
left-right assignment but the two pins in the middle are definitely
	the grounds.
 --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Looks like your Mitsumi matches the GUS! (Which is odd, since mine didn't,
but mine wasn't a FX001 either.) I also discovered that even though the
connector is too small, it's really 'close enough' to make contact if you
jam it on hard. Mind you, I don't take any responsibility for broken pins
if you go this route!

I'll punt on the Mitsumi interface question, since I don't know. Is it
available yet?

This is the same reaction that I had. I tried to guess what kind of path each
sound source was following (without peeking), but scored less than 50%.
Seperating left and right was easy, but up and down weren't very
distinguishable. It looks like you can replace the patches used in this
demo with any other 3d patches, too... time to play some more!

I don't know, no, and YES! I'm having the same problems with this demo.
Ultramid sucks up way too much room to allow 585k conventional memory
left over. I imagine with 386MAX, or QEMM this may be possible, but not
with any combination of the vanilla DOS 5.0 tools I could figure out! There
doesn't seem to be room for doing a 'lh ultramid'.

Does anybody have a magic recipe for this? (Other than Mega-em, or SBOS?)

BTW, should I be worried that EMM386 generates the error message:

EMM386: DMA Mode not available

When ultramid attempts to load? What's up with that?!

It's an interesting game... Sounds pretty gross through SBOS, though. Seems
like a real Wolf-3d/DOOM derivative, but the scenery is well done.

See my above bitching session. Granted, it looks like my problems are mainly
with the 585K memory requirement, but it's still a pain to require a TSR for
sound!

Ok folks, I've got a couple new questions:

1. Where's the ZORKDEMO these days? I couldn't find it on wuarchive.
Is this worth trying, and does the GF166.COM program for playing
digital samples come with it (if not, where is it?)

Anybody have the CD-based version of this yet? How is it?

2. A friend of mine is really fond of my Gravis MIDI-box. In fact, I
probably won't get mine back until I can tell him how to order one.
Could somebody post the U.S. ordering address AND PHONE NUMBER for
ordering direct from Gravis? If anybody has seen this offered by
a mail order house, gimme the name/phone # of it, please!

This info should really be in the FAQ!
