            ---- README file for COMt v1.05 ----

Thank you for using "COMt: the Telnet Modem".
Please take a few minutes to read the following information.

             ---- AUTOMATED INSTALLATION ----

COMt comes with an automated installation utility.
To use this, simply copy the distribution files to a floppy
or temporary directory, then double-click on the INSTALL.EXE
file from the Windows File Manager.

Once INSTALL starts, you will be given the oppor-
tunity to read the README.TXT file (this file). Then you
will be asked to choose a directory to install the COMt
files. Enter a directory name or just press <OK> to keep
the default of "c:\comt".

INSTALL will then copy the distribution files to
the directory of your choosing, with the exception of the
"commt.drv" file, which is always copied to the
\windows\system directory.

Once all the files have been copied, you will be
given the opportunity to allow INSTALL to create Program
Manager icons. This is recommended.

Once the icons are created, you will be presented
with a dialog allowing you to choose which COM port
numbers will be assigned to be "Telnet" ports. It it
recommended that you choose any unused ports. You can
change these settings after installation using the COMt
Configuration program.

This completes the installation. To begin using
COMt, simply restart Windows. Please refer to the
MANUAL.WRI file for complete details on how to use COMt.

               ---- MANUAL INSTALLATION ----

If the installation utility fails with an error
message, you may need to install COMt manually. To do so,
follow these steps:

1) Manually copy all the files in the distribution into a
directory of your choice (c:\comt is a good one).
2) Check to see if there is currently a file named
"commt.drv" in your Windows SYSTEM directory (usually
c:\windows\system). If there isn't, then skip to step
   5.
3) If you are upgrading from a previous version of COMt,
you need to make sure that COMt is FULLY uninstalled.
See the UNINSTALL directions later in this file.
4) If you are NOT upgrading from a previous version of
COMt, then you need to rename the file to something
else, "commt1.drv" is a good choice, assuming there is
   no file of THAT name.
5) Copy the c:\comt\commt.drv file to c:\windows\system.
6) Using Windows Notepad, open the SYSTEM.INI file in your
   Windows directory (usually c:\windows).
7) In the first section (the "[boot]" section), there
should be a line which begins with "comm.drv=". If
this line reads anything other than "comm.drv=commt.drv"
   skip to step 9.
8) Assuming you renamed c:\windows\system\commt.drv in
step 4, add a line in the [boot] section that reads
   "BeforeCOMt=commt1.drv".  Skip to step 10.
9) Add a line in the [boot] section that reads
"BeforeCOMt=<file>", where <file> is the name of the
file following the "comm.drv=" in the same section.
10) Copy the file that's now listed in the "BeforeCOMt"
line to a file called "commorig.drv". If there is
already a file called "commorig.drv", in the Windows
SYSTEM directory use another name ("commold.drv",
    "comm1.drv", etc).
11) Add a line in the [boot] section that reads
"commt.drv=<file>", where <file> is the new name of the
file you just copied (usually "commorig.drv").
12) Change the line in the [boot] section which begins with
"comm.drv=" such that it reads "comm.drv=commt.drv".
13) Save the SYSTEM.INI file to disk.
14) Run the COMt Configuration utility by double-clicking
the COMTCFG.EXE file from the Windows File Manager.
15) Select which ports you wish to use for Telnet and click
    OK.

This completes the manual installation. To begin
using COMt, simply restart Windows. Please refer to the
MANUAL.WRI file for complete details on how to use COMt.

             ---- UNINSTALL Instructions ----

To remove COMt from your system, follow these
steps:

1) First "unhook" COMt from your system.ini file. This can
be done by double-clicking the COMTCFG.EXE file from the
Windows File Manager, and pressing the "unhook" button.
2) If you got a message which either said "COMt not
installed" or "You must restart Windows for changes to
take effect", skip to step 11.
3) If you got an error message, then you will need to
unhook COMt manually. Do this by using Windows Notepad
to open the SYSTEM.INI file in your Windows directory
   (usually c:\windows).
4) In the first section (the "[boot]" section), there
should be a line which begins with "BeforeCOMt=". If
there is, skip to step 9.
5) If there is no "BeforeCOMt=" line, look for a file
called "comm.drv" in your Windows SYSTEM directory
(usually "c:\windows\system"). If there is one skip to
   step 8.
6) If there is no "comm.drv" file, look for a line in the
[boot] section which begins with "commt.drv=". If there
is no such line, then either COMt is not installed or
   cannot be uninstalled.
7) Rename the file specified in the "commt.drv=" line to be
   "comm.drv".
8) Change the line which begins with "comm.drv=" such that
it reads "comm.drv=comm.drv". Skip to step 10.
9) Change the line which reads "comm.drv=" such that it
reads "comm.drv=<file>", where <file> is the name of the
file specified in the "BeforeCOMt=" line.
10) Save the SYSTEM.INI file and close Windows Notepad.
11) At this point COMt is "unhooked", and can only be
completely uninstalled by restarting Windows. Do this
    now.
12) After Windows has restarted, open the SYSTEM.INI file
into Windows Notepad. There should be a line in the
[boot] section which begins with "commt.drv=".
13) In the Windows SYSTEM directory (usually
c:\windows\system) delete the file specified by the
    "commt.drv=" line.
14) Remove the "commt.drv=" line, save the SYSTEM.INI file,
    and exit Notepad.
15) Delete the commt.drv file from the Windows SYSTEM
    directory.

This completes the UNINSTALL of COMt. If you were
uninstalling COMt in order to install an updated copy,
you may proceed to do this now.
