[MEME TEXTE EN FRANAIS DANS LE FICHIER LISEZMOI.txt]

Welcome to Ultra Lingua, the Windows 95/98/NT version of the shareware
French-English dictionary formerly known as Le Franglophile.

Version 2.2 is a free update for registered users (see below, under "Installation").

WHAT DOES IT INCLUDE?

Why would you want to use it? Well, here are a few features...

* Over 250,000 indexed items, including over a hundred thousand
translations, and tens of thousands of secondary entries.
* Indications of literary, slang, and vulgar usage, and indications for
usage (including synonyms, accompanying prepositions, general categories,
and more).
* A reverse translation feature, which helps show how various choices
translate back into the departure language (an essential tool for zeroing
in on the right word or expression).
* A comprehensive on-line grammar reference for both French and English.
* Tables showing translations of numbers, expressions of time, geographical
terms, as well as samples of correspondence.
* Drag and Drop, allowing you to drag words between Ultra Lingua and other applications.
* Fully network-ready.
* Drop-down history, allowing you to retrace your lexical wanderings.
* All this at blinding speed, using surprisingly little memory.

WHAT'S NEW IN VERSION 2.2?

* A vastly augmented lexical corpus (thousands of new entries, including many technical terms and expressions).
* The addition of grammatical notes concerning irregular forms for
thousands of entries (plurals, past participles, future stems, etc.).
* The marking of English and American usage and spelling.
* Compatibility with SAPI text-to-speech engines, so you can check the
pronunciation of words and phrases. (Engines must be acquired separately; see our website for free English pronunciation. )
* Enhanced help files and grammatical references, available in both WinHelp
and HTML Help format.

* Improved selection, so you can easily find the reverse translation of
a part of a given word or phrase.
* many small interface enhancements, making operation smoother, more reliable, and more enjoyable.

HOW DO YOU INSTALL AND USE IT?

1. If you have a previous version of Ultra Lingua or Le Franglophile
installed on your computer, you should uninstall it first by using
the Add/Remove Programs control panel, which you can find by selecting
Control Panels from the Settings section of the Windows Start menu.

2. Run the installer (install.exe) and follow its instructions.

3. Launch Ultra Lingua by selecting it from the Programs section of
the Windows Start menu. Alternatively, you can open the folder in which you
installed the program (probably C:\Program Files\Ultra Lingua) and double-click
on ultralin.exe.

4. Ultra Lingua is straight-forward to use, but to learn more about its features,
you can find the on-line manual under the Help menu.

NOTE: Ultra Lingua allows you to use either Microsoft's WinHelp system
or the newer HTMLHelp system. The default is WinHelp, but you can switch to
HTMLHelp by selecting Options under the View menu. HTMLHelp is a very nice
way to navigate through help files, but it is not yet a stable technology
on all systems. If you have trouble with HTMLHelp, select the WinHelp option.

5. If you are already a registered user of Le Franglophile-Windows, your registration
number will also work with Ultra Lingua 2.2. Should the new version display the
registration reminder after installation, simply re-enter your registration
key under the Key menu.

HOW DO YOU UNINSTALL IT?

We hope you won't want to, but you can uninstall Ultra Lingua in one of
two ways. You can use the Add/Remove Programs control panel (look for it in
the Windows 95 Start menu under Settings and Control Panels), or you can
double-click uninstallUL.exe in the Ultra Lingua folder. If you want to know
the gory details of what the installer installs and what the uninstaller
uninstalls, read the install.txt file.

HOW DO YOU PAY FOR IT?

How nice of you to ask. The trial period lasts 30 days, after which you
should decide whether or not you will continue to use Ultra Lingua. If
you remain unregistered after 30 days, Ultra Lingua will continue to
function, but you will be reminded more urgently of your unregistered
status. Once you register Ultra Lingua and enter your registration key,
the reminders will cease.

Ultra Lingua is shareware, and it costs $25 for single user
licenses. (Note that a portion of profits goes to non-profit educational
organizations, including those that promote French language and culture.)
The easiest way to order is to choose the "Register Now" button in the
initial screen. Or, you can go to "Register now" in the Help menu. You can
also register on-line at http://order.kagi.com/?POB. Be sure to check the
box for the WINDOWS version of Ultra Lingua. (More information on
licenses and ordering is available under the Help menu).

CAN YOU DISTRIBUTE IT?

Ultra Lingua may be freely distributed under the following conditions:

-- ALL files (installer, read-me, program, help, and registration) are
distributed together;
-- NO registration codes are distributed;
-- ANY distribution via CD-ROM or other media is first cleared through us
(at WinFranglo@kagi.com). This allows us to make sure you distribute the
most current version.
