WordStar Keystroke Add-In for Microsoft Word 97 and later
=========================================================

Introduction
------------
This add-in allows you to use WordStar style keystrokes within Microsoft Word 97 and later. The keys provided include the full cursor movement diamond and a few other commands. The registered version adds to this giving over 100 commands in total! This evaluation version has a reduced command set. The differences are listed in the file 'Commands.txt'. It also provides some WS7 style pull-down menus.

Who should use this add-in?
---------------------------
If you are experienced with WordStar, are a touch typist, or just want a more efficient way of entering text into your word processor, but you're stuck with Word because 'everyone else uses it', then this add-in is for you.

Is the add-in hard to use?
--------------------------
No, it's very simple. Just copy the add-in into your Office\StartUp folder and it will be available the next time you start Word. See below for full details.

A basic WordStar tutorial is also included to get you started if you're not familiar with WordStar's commands. This is in the Word document format file "Tutorial.doc".

Which versions of Word can the add-in be used with?
---------------------------------------------------
This add-in only works with Word 97 and 2000. It does not work with earlier versions of Microsoft Word (Word 2 to 95). I hope to make a Word 2 to 95 version available soon.

What is the difference between an add-in and a template?
--------------------------------------------------------
Word stores document style settings in templates, .dot files. It also stores program code that expands or modifies Word in .dot files. User created macros get stored alongside the style data and this constitutes a template that you either get by default (Normal.dot) or can select when you do File | New. An add-in, on the other hand, is always available to all documents whenever Word is running and contains program code - grown up macros, if you will. Technically then, this keystroke enhancement is an add-in.

Further suggested enhancements
------------------------------
For full benefit the add-in can be used with Microsoft's, or other, Keyremap utilities to swap the CapsLock and Ctrl keys on standard PC keyboards, and the Microsoft Office supplemental import/export filters to add WordStar file import to Word. These utilities are available from:

Microsoft Keyremap
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents/WUToys/W95KernelToy/Default.asp The Keyremap utility works with both Windows 95 and 98. However, you should NOT use the other KernalToys utilities with Windows 98 unless you are sure they are safe to use.

Can it be uninstalled?
----------------------
Yes, very easily. You can either deselect it from the Word Tools | Templates and Add-Ins... dialog (Utilities | Templates and Add-Ins... if the program is running), or just delete it from your Office\StartUp folder. See below for full details.

How to install the add-in.
--------------------------
Unzip the downloaded file into a new folder. Read all of the text (*.txt) files to familiarise yourself with the program, and then...

Simply copy the WordSTAR.dot file into your Office\Startup folder.

For Office 97 this will normally be under:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office nn\Office\STARTUP (where nn is the version number)

And for Office 2000:

   C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP

If you've used different directories (folders) you'll need to modify the path to suit. These can be found by starting Word and selecting:

Tools | Options... Then select the File Locations tab and look for the path listed against Startup. If part of the path is represented by elipsis (...), click the Modify button to display the full path. Click Close, then Close again. Note that once the add-in is in use the Tools menu is called Utilities.

The next time you start Word it will use the add-in.

How to uninstall the add-in.
----------------------------
Remove the WordSTAR.dot file from your Office\Startup folder.

Utilities | Options... (Tools | Options... if the add-in has been turned off, see below). Then select the File Locations tab and look for the path listed against Startup. If part of the path is represented by elipsis (...), click the Modify button to display the full path. Click Close, then Close again. Note that once the add-in is in use the Tools menu is called Utilities.

Then delete the remainder of the installation file set from the folder you unzipped them into.

How to temporarily turn on/off the add-in's functions.
------------------------------------------------------
Under Utilities (if the add-in is running) or Tools (if it is not) menu, select Templates and Add-Ins... (un)check the box next to WordSTAR.dot and then click OK.

Will there be updates?
----------------------
This distribution is the Shareware evaluation version of the add-in. It does not entitle you to updates. Upon registration you will gain access to the latest version of the full add-in. This will be updated from time-to-time as its feature set is expanded. Once the feature set covers all major WordStar commands the updates will stop - unless bugs are reported that I can fix. If Word changes I will consider adapting the add-in to match if there is enough demand.

What can the add-in actually do?
--------------------------------
There is a full list of the supported WordStar commands in the file 'Commands.txt'. This also shows the command list available in the registered version - at the time of writing.

Can I still use Word's shortcuts?
---------------------------------
Yes, as long as they don't clash with WordStar's keystroke set, the original Word keyboard shortcuts still exist. No features have been removed.

Will the add-in work with Word 2000?
------------------------------------
Yes, the add-in is fully compatible with all VisualBasic for Applications versions of Word for Windows.

Will the add-in work with Word 2, 6, or 95?
-------------------------------------------
No, unfortunately not. These versions of Word used WordBasic rather than VBA. I may produce a version for earlier Word version.

Will the add-in work with Mac versions of Word?
-----------------------------------------------
No, unfortunately not.

Where can I get support for the add-in?
---------------------------------------
You can get support by registering. The evaluation version does not entitle you to support. However, there is a mailing list for the program at: http://www.onelist.com/community/WordSTAR. You can also visit the program's Web site at: http://www.petrie.u-net.com/wordstar.

Where can I get help about WordStar?
------------------------------------
There is a mailing list at wordstar@cuenet.com. You can subscribe to this lively forum by sending an e-mail to wordstar-request@cuenet.com with a topic of "subscribe" (without the quotes). To unsubscribe, send another message with "unsubscribe" as the topic. The forum discusses all sorts of issues as well as WordStar, so if you join, try to get involved, and give it a little time if you see more non-WS topics than those for WS itself.

What does it cost to register for the full version?
---------------------------------------------------
The add-in costs US $34.99 per user. Registration can be completed by visiting http://www.soft-shop.com/cgi-bin/product.html?94157723017. The registration will entitle you to free minor upgrades and support. Major upgrades may require further registration. Check your download site for the latest details.

Is the unregistered add-in limited in any way?
----------------------------------------------
The unregistered add-in is a fully functioning program that offers the basic WordStar navigation keystroke set (the WordStar Diamond) plus its ^Q accelerators and some menu customisations. The keystroke set is limited to just over 20 functions, plus seven ALT Key combinations that aren't part of WordStar's command set.

The evaluation version does not entitle you to any support. The evaluation version will also remind you that it isn't registered after you change the document you're working on and use any of the ^Q accelerator keys for the first time. Should you wish to continue using it after 60 days you MUST purchase the registered version.

The registered version includes over 110 of the most commonly used WordStar commands, plus a few extra ALT Key combinations and more complete WordStar 7d style pull-down menus. The registered version also entitles you to support and free minor upgrades. A comparison list of the commands provided in each version is in the file 'Commands.txt'. Both versions are Shareware and you are bound by the licence included with the program.
