                         INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR
32-BIT NDIS 3.0 DRIVER FOR WINDOWS NT 3.X WITH
HP J2585A 10/100VG PCI LAN ADAPTERS

NOTE: The Novell Netware Windows NT Requestor does not use this driver.

This document contains the instructions for installing the HP J2585A
10/100VG LAN adapter and its 32-bit Network Driver Interface Specification
(NT) version 3.X driver under Windows NT.

The HP NDIS 3.0 driver is self-configuring, which means the driver will
automatically read in the HP 10/100VG LAN card's configuration (e.g.
interrupt channel and memory address range). Only the card's location
parameter (i.e. base I/O address) needs to be specified in the registry.

The 32-bit NT 3.X driver is contained in the HP Support Disk directory:

     \WINNT\HPFEND.SYS - 32-bit NT 3.X driver
\WINNT\OEMSETUP.INF - Windows NT installation file

Microsoft Windows NT network adapter setup uses the file named OEMSETUP.INF
to determine the driver information for the HP 10/100VG LAN adapter installed
in your computer. Information from the OEMSETUP.INF file is used by the
network adapter setup utility to install the driver into the Windows NT.

NOTE: Throughout these instructions, the term 'HP LAN Card' will be used to
refer to the HP J2585A PCI LAN Adapter.

To install the HP LAN Card and its 32-bit NT 3.X driver for Windows NT,
 follow the instructions below:

 1. Install the HP LAN Card and run HPVGSET.

Follow instructions in the 'Setting Up Your Card and LAN Connection'
and 'Using Memory-Mapped Mode' sections of the Installation Guide.
Also, refer to the note on "Interrupt Sharing" in the file
\TECHNOTE\PCI_INFO.TXT on the HP Support Disk.

Run HPVGSET and note the first address under the "I/O Address Range"
heading for use as the "Base I/O Address" parameter in step 4.

If installing NT for the first time, proceed to step 2.

 If NT is already installed,
    a) Select the "Network" icon within the "Control Panel" group.
    b) When "Network Settings" window appears, select "Add Adapter"
to bring up the Network Adapter Setup dialog box.
    c) Proceed to step 3.

 2. Install Microsoft Windows NT.

Locate the Microsoft Windows NT System Guide manual and the Microsoft
diskette labeled "Windows Setup Disk #1" if you are installing from
floppy disks, or the "Setup Disk for CD-ROM Installation" if you are
     installing from CD-ROM.

With the computer turned off, insert the Microsoft diskette in the
boot floppy drive and then turn on the computer.

Follow the instructions on each window to install Windows NT.

The steps to arrive at the "Network Adapter Setup" dialog box is
different depending on the installation method chosen. Refer to the
instructions below that correspond to the installation method:
     express setup or custom setup:

     Express Setup
     -------------
For Express Setup, Windows NT Setup automatically checks for a
network adapter and installs the first one it recognizes. Windows
NT Setup cannot detect HP network adapters so it will continue and
ask if the Microsoft Remote Access Service should be installed.
If the Remote Access Service is not installed, Express Setup then
displays displays the Network Adapter Setup dialog box. Proceed to
	step 3.

     Custom Setup
     ------------
For Custom Setup, Windows NT Setup asks to detect the network
adapter in the computer. Select the "Do Not Detect" button.
Setup will then display the Network Adapter Setup dialog box.
	Proceed to step 3.

 3. Select the network adapter driver.

When the "Network Adapter Setup" window appears, use the arrow
     keys to highlight the line:

        <Other> Requires disk from manufaturer

Press the ENTER key to select this item.

When the "Insert Diskette" window appears, insert the HP Support Disk
into floppy drive and enter the path name at the prompt. For example,
if the diskette is in floppy drive A, then enter:

        A:\WINNT

When the "Select OEM Option" window appears with the line:

HP J2585A 10/100VG PCI LAN Adapter

Highlight this line to indicate which HP LAN Card is installed and
press the ENTER key to select it.

Setup will load all the required driver files from the \WINNT
directory of the HP Support Disk.

NOTE: If there is any other HP 10/100-VG LAN Adapter card previously
installed in your PC, Windows NT will fail to properly copy the
new driver from the Support Disk. Copy the driver file manually
into <WINNT>\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS directory on your PC (<WINNT> is
the root directory of the NT system files).

	     a) Select the disk drive where NT is installed
(e.g. if NT is on the E drive then type E: and press the
                RETURN key)
             b) Change directory to \SYSTEM32\DRIVERS
(type "cd \SYSTEM32\DRIVERS" and press the RETURN key)
	     c) Rename the old HPFEND.SYS file
(type "rem HPFEND.SYS HPFEND.OLD" and press the RETURN key)
	     d) Copy the new HPFEND.SYS file from your floppy drive
(e.g. if the HP Support Disk is in Drive A: then type
"copy A:\WINNT\HPFEND.SYS HPFEND.SYS" and press the
		RETURN key)

 4. Edit parameters to match LAN Adapter configuration.

When the "HP J2585A PCI LAN Adapter Setup" dialog box appears edit the
parameter of the network driver. Ensure that the "Base I/O Address"
field matches the settings shown by HPVGSET in step 1.

After all parameters are correctly set, select the "OK" button to finish
installing the NT 3.X driver into the Windows NT environment.

All the installation steps required for the NT 3.X driver are finished.

NOTE: If Express or Custom Setup was chosen in step 2, complete the
installation of Windows NT. If the Control Panel Network
applet was chosen in step 2, select "Close" to process the
changes made to the network configuration.

The installation and/or changes of network configuration will not take
effect until the computer is rebooted.

NOTE: after rebooting NT, if the driver fails to load, see the section
titled "Reading the Event Log" to understand the cause.

 Reading the Event Log
 =====================

If the driver fails to start or does not appear to be working correctly
examine the Event Log for any driver diagnostic messages. The Event Log can
be examined using the Event View Applet in the Administrative Tools
 group in the Program Manager:

	1. Start the Event Viewer applet
	2. Search the Source column for any entries named "HPFEND".
	3. Double click on that entry to examine the Event Detail dialog box.

	Description of Event Log:

The upper half of the box gives a short generic description of the
error. In the lower half of the box is a hex and ASCII dump of error
data. Scroll through this dump and search the ASCII dump for any
readable strings. A readable string will describe the problem found
in more detail. If no string is present this typically indicates
that the driver failed early in the process of loading usually due
to a resource conflict (e.g. I/O port conflict).
